Can someone help sort my brain about the Generations?

Hello. I've been away awhile, so I have a few questions reguarding the lineage(?) of Daz characters. When I was here, Genesis was still kinda new. There was Genesis, then Genesis 2 and I think Genesis 3. But I don't remember some things.

1st... Were V4and M4 clothes and textures compatible with Genesis 1? I just don't remember...

Were Genesis' future generations backards compatible with previous versions?

And I'm a little lost about the progression of generations. So, there was Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 and Genesis 3...

Is there a Genesis 4, 5, 6, or 7?

I have Victoria and Michael 5. Which Genesis do they belong to?

I have Stephanie 5 and 6... And who do they belong to?

And I have Giavani 7... Which one is that?

I have Victoria 8, but not 6 or 7

Please help... I'm a little confused. Thanks

Yeah - it can be a little confussing.

Genesis refers to characters no 5.

Genesis 2 refers to characters no 6

Genesis 3 refers to characters no 7

Genesis 8 refers to characters no 8.

Genesis 9 (current) refers to character no 9.

Welcome back again :) It will be an adventure figuring this all out. Compatibility is pretty decent up through G8. Someone correct me, but V4 stuff works with Genesis, but not so much with higher levels. You can use though with some manipulations, or extra PA products to do the conversions. Quite a few of the older clothing and stuff will work on G9, not so much going backwards though. G9 is like its own thing, unfortunately, but again, PAs have developed products to allow using on other characters. There is so much stuff now it makes your head spin. laugh

V4 stuff (conformed) cannot be directly used on any Genesis generation... there has to be an Auto-Fit with Clone(s). blush

    OKAY!! smiley

Thanks, everyone! This does help! I'm actually looking forward to sorting it all out. I have so much "new" stuff in my Product Library that I'm sure I never bought.LOL. It looks like I was given stuff automatically with each new iterration of Genesis... which is very cool, actually., but does leave me a little bewildered, so I appreciate the infor very much! Okay! I am still downloading. I've been letting Daz Studio just put things where it wants, but I know I will have to sort it out so it all makes sense to me somehow... Wish me luck! I'll probably be back!

Oh! Do tell! I do love me some freebies! heart I grabbed a few of this weeks feebies. Is there a repository of past freebies I should know about?

Also, what's the Daz+ like these days? Worth it?

there is a banner on front page for free items... I usually go to SHOP, then arrange by price, low to high. Free pops right up.  There is a lot of discussion on DAZ+, pro and con. My membership ends Tuesday. I'm not renewing, but you can still save a lot of moeny if you;re buying a lot by being a memeber, although DAZ has changed its sales a lot, not allowing stacking of coupons in most cases. Can;t get the huge deal like in the past.

Prices in general have gone up, including DAZ+/

This is good, though it stops mostly with Genesis 2.

it's a bit of work but free

V4,M4,A4,K4 etc can be autofitted to genesis 1

from there you can domino fit to Genesis 2, 3 and 8/8.1

or fit straight from genesis 1 to genesis 9

    it's what I do

protip fit dresses, cloaks etc as shirts or long hair (if sleeveless) then add a Dforce modifier dynamic surface

and optionally create a Dforce modifier weight node (I select all with geometry editor and fill with zero weights then paint in the bits I want to simulate)

read or watch one of the many tutorials that explain it in more detail and better than I can

    a good thread here

Depending on your budget ,and if you have alot of stuff from Generation 4 You might want to look at RiverSoftArts Converters for both Clothing and Hair .......

Generally G8F and to a lesser extent G8M have huge amounts of freebies available.

Being a long lived generation G8 is a bit like the replacement V4/M4 and it can wear G3F/M clothing relatively easily. G8F has a reduced mesh density compared to G3F, and the default pose is with arms at 45° to the horizontal, legs slightly different angle otherwise the meshed surface is virtually identical - sort of makes G3F an early iteration of G8F. Anyway there are thousands of freebies for G8 around.

I've done a couple of [hundred] freebie poses at Rendo and have one or two other items available (including intergenerational pose transfer scripts allowing [say] V4 poses on G3F/G8F) in the freebie forum here and at Renderosity. Other people specialise in clothing or props or.. you get the idea. At Rendo, do search for bBarbs for poses and Itazura too. AmyAmie and PJZ99/Squishy for clothes at Rendo, Deviant Art or the freebie forum here. There are loads of character morphs around too - look up AOBB in the freebie forum for Hollywood Movie Star characters in G8 and [soon] G9. Also Adam Thwaites at MostDigitalCreations.com does a lot of freebie (and paid) content. Don't forget sharecg.com for freebies.

All the freebies will help reduce the cost of the initial months of your reintroduction to DS while you reassess the state of everything and decide what avenue you want to pursue.

    Regards,

    Richard.

For freestuff, there is also the freebies section on 3dshards.com:

    https://3dshards.com/product-tag/free/

Some freebies are addons for paid products (either on 3Dshards.com or Daz3d.com), but they are plenty of freebies usable alone.

Just a warning, the website requires personnal information to give access to the freebies. The FAQ speaks about a guest mode, but I wasn't able to find how I'm supposed to take advantage of that mode.

You might want to take a look at Poser and Daz Free Resources Poser and Daz Free Resources (miraheze.org). It identifies old stuff and new stuff and is a bit more organized then the freebie sites.

It was always confusing that Genesis and Generation were different numbers, so if someone said G3 or Gen3, you had no idea what they were necessarily talking about.

I'm glad they decided to get the numbers to match, but it's going to be a bit until the confusion is fully laid to rest. ;)

I only skimmed the thread, but I didn't notice anyone mentioning the UV issue.

Genesis 1 was natively able to take textures which used the V4, M4, or K4 UVs. There was a drop-down in the surfaces tab where you could choose which one the program was using.

Genesis 2 couldn't, and iirc the different base figures each had their own UVs, although many/most PAs stuck to the G2F and G2M, or the V6 or M6 UVs.You can get stung if somebody didn't. Conversion utilities were already out to deal with clothing, but we started getting some for UVs as well. A lot of peple wanted to keep using their library of gen4 skins on the newer figures.

Genesis 3 also had its own UVs and some figure bases still had their own. PAs were more and more ignoring those for the G3F and G3M UVs. Conversion utilities were becoming more popular, but some lesser-used figures (like K4) got left behind.

With G8 the developers evidenty decided that backwards compatibility was a thing. G8 uses the same UV as G3 and you can use a G3 skin on a G8 figure with few issues. There were still seperate UVs for male and female. They added a seperate eylash figure with G8, but that is fairly easily dealt with.

Genesis 8.1 had a new UV layout, but there was a surfaces dropdown to enable using G8 UVs.. I can't recall whether it was the later half of G8 (which was the main figure for hearly as long as gen4) or with G8.1 that there was a utility which enables using skins on the oposite gender.

G9 has upset the apple cart again. Although conversion utilities are showing up for it.

I'm fairly sure of all of that, but I may have missed some details.

Wow! Thanks for the breakdown, JOdel! (btw -hi!) That really awesome detailed info is very much appreciated. :) I do remember some of that, but it's so great to be filled in on what I missed and didn't know. Thank you!
