Part of face renders rough.

I haven't been able to find a solution to this common problem. I render a figure and more of their skin renders smooth, but parts (often in shadow) render rough. It's not a case of fireflys, but of low rendering. No matter how long I let the render go, these areas remain rough. Aside from flooding in light from every direction (not very artful), is there a solution to this?

Thanks.

It always appears to me to be the lighting conditions. I believe that somehow Iray isn't picking up enough light in those situations - or similar - even when it doesn't appear that, that should be true.

The reason I'm thinking that is because when it happens to me, I alter the lighting conditions and it fixes the problem.

So I think it may be due to the translucency (and likely other factors) in the skin shader requiring a different angle of light - or the same angle boosted.

Sometimes it happens when I actually want that side to be darker - more in the shadows. Sometimes making it even darker helps too, if the lit side is a bit more robust with light.

Hope this helps give a clue to your fix as well.

Thanks. I've added a plane as a "bounce card" which seems to help a bit.

maybe post a render here so we can see and probably identify the trouble that causes this
