Someone nailed the head and skin of a 14 year old anime character onto the body of a 35 year old Norwegian man. What an unsettling sight.
I suspect that Wang takes partial inspiration from Invincible's protagonist, Mark Grayson, who is a biracial Asian American. Wang also seems to be this generation's Yuzuru/Kenji, not quite Stylized, not quite Real World, fit for a modern JRPG game world.
Everybody have fun tonight! Everybody Wang 9 tonight!
Ok, maybe not. This Wang doesn't seem like the most fun time to me. I like my Wangs to be more exciting, walking a bit more on the wild side. For some reason this Wang reminds me more of Catty 8.1 with the uneventful skin. You can certainly have a character with fabulously smooth skin, but that is tricky to pull off well and Wang just isn't pulling hard enough here.
Part of me wonders if Wang's release is to capitalize on the new "Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name" (yes that's the name) video game that just released on November 8. A couple promos look like Wang could be a background character in the game. And he would be a background character compared to Kiryu. Tell me, which would you prefer?
Kiryu:
Wang 9:
Which, on that note, the Kiryu image is a shot from the video game in question. While you can pick apart some things, you can pick apart just as much in a typical Daz render (if not more these days). Just another reason why Genesis 9 does not excite me.
Yes, his skin is very featureless. I ended up using Dain's skin in the above image.
A couple more. Again, same face as above, Dain's skin. I thinned his body out a bit, made his shoulders less broad, shortened his neck (which is really long) and increased the size of his head a little. There's potential. LOL
It's customary for me to make a custom version of a Daz base and save it to my library after I've "fixed" it to my liking.
I know I started a separate thread bout it for G9 males in general...but Wang 9's chest is particularly wonk.
I'm working on it. LOL
Edit: This is likely as good as I'm going to get it with the morphs I have.
Sigh... remember how people thought that making a unisex figure would solve all the problems with there not being enough support for male figures? Coming in at just over a year since G9's introduction, Wang 9 seems to be making a very good case that that assumption was wrong. Really, Genesis 9 has been a pretty dismal bag across the board thus far, with the only bright spot being the toon-style figures, but I'm hard pressed to think of a single male character that's stood out. I'm especially disapointed here as, besides the various head and proportion issues, the actual contents of the bundles is even more lackluster than usual. I mean, seriously, 3 sweatsuit/hoodie/running outfits for the Pro Bundle?
I think the pecs and brows and perhaps the clumpy lashes aren't my favorite aspect of Wang. The brows look unrealistic, and the pecs seem a bit...soft for such a cut and angular head. The lashes are mascara-ish looking
I'm passing on bundles since I just don't need more baggy shapeless dforce clothing.
I did buy the outfit with the realistic hoood, the textures and the cyber eyes.
What are you using to move the nipple location?
(I know there's wide anatomical variation in nipple placement in the real world, but I have preferences! :))
What morph packs do you have? I'm looking to help de-boobify a male figure I've been working on and so far nothing I've tried has been able to get the lower pec to not look like a boob, especially the nipple placement. I like what you've done here.
It's a combo of base morphs, Vinme morphs and SF Design Easy Pecs. There is also a morph under Tools in Parameters that is a Chest Volume fix that helps to de-moobify the pecs some ;)
I actually don't think the unisex mesh is the issue with the chest, it is simply a design flaw. The idea can work, but it needs execution.
Frankly execution for products has been off in general. Victoria 9 looked nice, and with a few exceptions, most of the core 9 line has been quite weak. It doesn't feel like things are headed in the right direction here. If Daz wants better sales, they need better products. I don't understand how anyone can recommend Wang at all. He has way more problems than just his chest. The very plain skin, the oddly small head, and freaky neck. What is going on with this dude's neck? Did he swallow a pyramid?
Any vampire that tries to bite Wang could potentially lose an eye! That Adam's Apple is dangerous!
I can get buying something and customizing. I pretty much do that with everything. But we are seeing wholesale changes here, using another character's skin, trying to fix the body morph, and so on. At that point...why? I don't understand.
It's a good point outrider42, and I think that's the beauty of these review threads, that there's discussion and experimentation so people can see possibilities or not. I really enjoy robust anatomy threads, I'm always learning.
Here's more experimenting from me. Un-altered vs an Wang-Aroon-Minjun mix (who all seem to play well together), although that chest is a work in progress. Swapped out eyebrows and the mix had Wang's base mats and then I put n Dain 9's normals (I seem to put Dain 9's normals over everything at the moment).
If I get him I won't be using his heavy morph. Did you notice fat as all get out in the mid-section with a lean and muscular on his rib cage under his arms. Doesn't happen like that in real life.
Yep, that's a photo of Gackt... but it's nice that I'm not the only one that sees the resemblance. My own render is nowhere near so handsome as the real person, unfortunately.
There are so many weird, weird problems with the character and the bundle though. It looks like someone forgot to sculpt his body at all, his head proportion is distinctly off, there's no icon to load the pants in the Monday outfit and there are missing files in the Ready To Wear texture expansion. I'm really not sure what's going on.
Edit: and another quick* render, this time with Xiu Lin's normals and the new guy Caleb's makeup. This one's getting away from me though, I keep adding stuff, so I'm still working on it...
* Hahahaha... no such thing as a quick render any more. *sob*
I have the Vinme morphs and SF Design Easy Pecs...will need to keep playing with them!
A couple of Wang with different skins: Nathan and Jack
And a couple of mixes: Michael (with Michael skin) and Genghis Khan (with Sandor skin & body/face hair - who has chest problems when you have chest hair!?)

I'd dearly like to support Creators of quality male content...but, for all the aforementioned issues, Wang9 just isn't cutting it.
Typical dforce noodle clothing. There is clothing made for dforce to its advantage for extra realism...and then there's phoning it in and giving just tubes. This is an example of the later.
Playing with feminine mixes, I find fits better than the masculine ones (all 60% head / 40% body from Wang):
@stelari those feminine mixes look really good!
I'm trying to resist the urge... to... talk about... the obvious and very incorrect pun... this combination brings up.
All the weird issues aside, I do actually quite like working with him (once I proportion him more to my liking) and I had fun working on this throwback to all the overdramatic Japanese rock artists of my youth; the old props from waaaay back update to Iray really nicely too. Plus, I started listening to Gackt and Pierrot again and they hold up remarkably well.
glorious fail on my side then :D
still you did a pretty good job with the renders above
I like this one. I've been waffling about this character but this is interesting to me. Also, what outfit are you using here?
I think it helps that I probably had a different set of expectation about his character based on his appearance than I think some others did* (see: my misspent youth listening to said overdramatic Japanese rock artists), because he does have quite the resemblance to some of them. ^^; And I love the female mixes earlier in the thread, although I don't really render women. I just wish there were more musician pose sets that weren't Gen8 hierarchical presets, because most of them assume the character has a tail...
The outfit is the new CB Ethan Clothing Set with some fabric shaders on the shirt, and the makeup's from the CB Ethan HD character.
* Edit: That is, I mean, his face. Not his weird potato body. That head does not belong on a body that's only a marginal improvement on mine...
I also got Wang 9, since I like his face. Unlike others, I don't hate his eyebrows. Here he is out of the box:
I would say that his fingers are wonky. I'm unsure if that's wrong (if someone has finger joints that look like this), but it looks wrong. Here's what I mean:
Aside from the wonky hands, as others have mentioned, I think his body might be too wide for his face shape. So I mixed him with other shapes to something closer to my liking. I also tweaked his material presets and maps since I like the skin more reactive to light (not necessarily more realistic, just more stylized to my tastes, which is why I like using metallicity on the skin). Here are some comparisons:
And here is a screenshot of the dials I used to alter his shape (in case anyone's interested, click for higher res pic):
