Joint Editor Tool to move pivot points

I'm using the Joint Editor Tool to change some gun figures to my liking, specifically, moving the pivot point to the handles, then saving them as props. It worked fine for a couple dozen guns, until I got to Dayglo's mk23 pistol. When I move the pivot point or the end point, the gun moves right along with it. Anyone know a way around this? Also, I have no idea what the implications of moving these points around is, except that I get to rotate the object around the point I want it to rotate around. Am I going to find some nasty surprise later on? Also, is there any place I should be moving the end points to? I've been moving them to a point near the end of the receiver but only because I didn't want them floating off in space where the authors left them. That's kind of what has me worrying about unforeseen consequences, actually - why are these points all floating off in space outside the model unless there's some good reason for them to be there?

  • Do the guns have skeletons or are they just a single node? If they are figures with skeletons set-up to fit to a figure then yes, moving the end point will probably break things (and that may be why one isn't working).

Yeah I figured that might be an issue, but then I figured that isn't much of a loss because autofit seems to either break all guns, or do nothing to the figure, so I've been just parenting guns to hands. Not really sure what advantages a properly conformed gun figure would have over one that is simply parented, if any.

Is there some way to correct for crappy, cock-eyed orientation in DS? Something where I can rotate it until it looks straight, then click a button and have the rotation values "reset" to zero without moving the object? I hope that makes sense...
  • Ah, in that case - assuming the guns don't have moving parts of their own - I would export as OBJ and then reimport to get a prop version that will be easier to work with.

You mean something like mcjChangeOrientation? Works for me.

Richard - okay, I'll give that a whirl, thanks. Vadimmt - I just got it yesterday and I can sorta do some things with it but haven't got it to "zero" things yet. My problem with finding out how stuff works is I'm on dialup so videos are out, and videos seem to be how tutorials are done these days. Guys I should fiddle with it some more and see if I can figure out how it works.

And yeah, lots of them have moving parts. Doh. Hadn't thought of that. :(
