Sudden slowdown

About halfway through a series of renders 3Delight started taking much longer to render the images.  From 2-3 hours to 8-12.

I made no changes to any technical stuff like lighting (which I know can slow thing down) and it's been horribly slow ever since, even with totally unrelated projects.

Can anyone think of something that might be to blame?

How are you rendering them?  One after another, image sequence, something else?

To a new window or direct to a file?

One after the other, to a new window.  Daz 4.8.

If you post an image of your Render Settings pane, someone may be able to help.

One thing to check is the Shading Rate which can drastically affect render times, what is it set to?

You could try altering progresssive on/off. That helped me.

    How much memory?

I think each one is being held in memory, so you will eventually run out and then virtual memory will be used...swapping to disk is always going to slow things down.

    0.010

Do you mean free disc space?  Or saved scenes?

    1) displacement maps and raytraced shadows.

    2) reflections in small objects that may be enabled but unnecessary.

    3) backround task such as AV scan.

Shading rate of 0.010 is insane...you shouldn't need to go under 0.2 and even that is a bit on the low side/final render.

And total RAM/free RAM, not disk space.

shouldn't go any lower than .1 for final renders and .2-4 for test renders. Most people use .1

As Stratdragon said check for reflections in small objects. I once had problems because several belt buckles and clasps had full reflection settings that were not needed.

I didn't change the shading rate.  I haven't changed any settings that I know of, I tend to just press the render button...

Perhaps loading a previously saved scene has changed it, that can happen.

Did setting the Shading Rate back to 0.2 fix your problem?

Tried it out with a higher shading rate and it's fair flying now.  Thank you all kindly.

  • Ok, so this is a bit of a necro, but thank you. I had this exact same problem, and my shading rate had somehow gotten turned all the way down to .01. Thanks. My 3Delight renders are back at full speed now!

Check how much free space you have on your hard drive C:/  atleast 25% free space helps it run more efficiently.
