Anyone using an Alienware Aurora R15 system?

I found a good deal on one for 25% off (black friday deal) with an rtx 4080. I am on the fence about the purchase and was wondering if anyone here is using one. I know it's a high end Dell, but I don't plan on doing any upgrades since it has decent specs.

LOL, I need to purchase it first. I bought a 4070 ti system last month from another store and it was DOA, so I got my money back and have been looking for a good deal since. Kinda hoping this might be it, but seeing mixed reviews on it. I am worried about heat since it has a funky case design and know the 4080 can run a bit hot. It also has a Ryzen 9 7900X cpu which will be my first AMD cpu ever.

Yep Alienware is improving but that plastic case is something that would deter me.... just seems cheap and unnecessary.

This might not be relevant to the purchase you're considering, but...

It sure makes my R11 with an RTX 3080 and I7 CPU old. I'm not a gamer, but it takes everything I throw at it in terms of DAZ. I'm impressed with how it performs and its reliability; I would consider buying another one when it's time to upgrade.

Thanks. I have never considered an Alienware system before because in the past, they were just priced too high (and you got the quaility back then), but at over $600 off and a 4080, it's something to consider. It also has 3 TB of storage which is important for me since most systems only come with enouigh storage for the OS these days and I don't want to have to add more myself.

My friend, who eventually became an asset supervisor for Sony Online Entertainment, used to come home for a visit from CA with his AlienWare Portable Workstation.

The thing looked like a thick laptop - but it didn't behave like one!

Power it on and it sounded like a little jet - but quieter. He'd fire up Maya and start building really nice star ships in front of your eyes, barely looking at the screen while holding a conversation - didn't even stutter or go "Ummm" kust kept right on modeling like driking a glass of water.

I looked at his cool little Wacom Graphire 3 and commented on it. He unplugged it and gave it to me. "I have a ton of these things. Keep it".

I still can't use that thing for anything but sketching and painting in PD Howler! LOL

Even that, I prefer a mouse!

How do you feel about building one?  I built my current PC using parts I bought on Amazon:

  • I have an R8 that I bought in 2018 or 2019 (I don't remember well) and it has turned out very good. That's where I do all my work and my renders.

  • If the numbers work for you, it should be fine, but I would be concerend about the propritary parts that Dell insists on using. This can make upgrading the system a challenge in the future. Complete specs on the system in question would be helpful if you are looking for advice. I just did a quick pass at Dell for the Auroroa 15s and nothing I saw on their current website is something I would recommend.

Last time I purchased a dell, I regretted it. It was a long time ago, so it may have changed. I wanted to change the GPU, and to do so, I needed to change to a higher rated PSU. Problem was, the motherboard used some retarded connector for the PSU, so I couldn't change that, without also replacing the motherboard. I ended up just building a whole new PC at that point, and swore never again to buy a prebuilt, especially a dell lol

Thanks for all the feedback. I ended up passing on this deal even though I came close to hitting the buy button a couple of times. I ended up finding a good CyberpowerPC deal with an ASUS 4070ti instead and double the system RAM for one grand less than the R15 system with a Black friday special. Hopefully there are no issues with it and I get it on time. Thanks again.
