Revitalizing old props with new shaders and textures

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to automatically "modernize" the look of old props by using modern shaders and textures or a product that can automatically convert the props/sets for you.

For example, is there a way to revitalize a prop like this? The Courtyard | Daz 3D

It looks very nice, but also quite old. In other cases, I have noticed the the shader tends to cancel all the old textures and remove any details from the floors, walls, etc. Is there a way to avoid that? Thanks!!!

In these cases, Daz Studio will attempt to "auto-convert" these to iray-compatible if you attempt to render them as-is. You can also convert them manually by applying the Iray Uber Shader (part of one of the default products so you will have this).  However, this will obviously not be ideal and cannot "upscale" the textures to really utilise iray features. Many of the older environments do have an "Iray version" which would do as you ask - supply newer, higher-quality iray textures for the old mesh. I didn't spot if there was such a product for that item tho.

Any objects using simple shaders you can ofcourse apply any other shader from your library if it would lead to a better result.

I don't have that product to see what textures it uses.

  • If an older, 3delight, product uses displacement the  you probably will lose detail on covnerting to Iray as the older engine uses sub-polygon displacement, it can work without needing explicitly decalred geoemtry, while Iray needs actual vertices or virtual vertics from SubD (and there is a limit to how high you can push that). What you need to do there is convert the displacement to normal maps - a lot of tools will do this, but not DS itself (although you could assign the dispalcement as bump, if that is free). There isn't an automated tool, and I am not sure that one would be possible, though you may find that one of these helps
