A question regarding shapes

i always wanted to ask, but never came to do so:
 

if there is a shape that says: character xy needed and compatibility genesis xy,

does it work without owning the specific character?
i understand, that it would probably look somewhat different from what is shown
but comatibility seems to imply, that it does work without

to be more specific: currently on sale Celeste for Teen Raven 8
 i do not own teen raven 8 (yet)

could i still make use of it?

Yes, you can. The morph just won't look the same as the pictures.
