GTX 960 GAMING 4G Power Connector Woes

Okay, so I got my GTX 960 GAMING 4G in the mail.

Now, I know that MSI documentation is pretty basic, but it should just plug right in, correct?

Incorrect.

My power supply (700w) doesn't have an eight-pin connector.

It has a six-pin that fits, with 3 black wires on top (closest to the PC board), 3 yellow on bottom.

Now, I'm not a "Hey, Earl, watch this" kind of guy, and I really don't want to experiment with a

new video card, so can someone tell me what the pin layout is on this video card? If all four upper wires

on your connector are black, etc, I'll chance it.

(What I'm asking is does MSI run 4+ and 4- power wires to insure enough wattage, or do these 8 wires

have another purpose besides power delivery?)

And just what is that covered card connector on the other end of the video card for?

I would rather not buy another power supply. Thanks. Until I get this done my 3D time is on hold.

Urgh.

Well, if all else fails, look in the freakin' box.

Which is where I found the six-to-eight pin power adapter cable.

    *sigh*

    Sure is dark in here...

Just make sure you're not forcing your PSU to run at max all the time, it will wear out quicker and may go with a bang.

I don't even know how to do that...

The card was too big for my computer case, one corner wouldn't clear the frame by about 6mm. So I had to transfer the guts to an older full tower that I have.

Same footprint, but I gained four hard drive bays, three DVD bays, and lots of fans.

    Sounds like a jet engine.

But I am still limited by the motherboard to one video card. And my on-board video is disabled now!

But my iray render times have dropped by around 80%.

What used to take 8 hours now takes 1. 3delight times haven't improved much, though.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    I don't think 3Delight uses the GPU.

So adding the video card did nothing for 3Delight?

Okay, I can live with that. iray looks better, anyway. Now I just have to figure out how to use it properly.

    Instructional videos are my friend.

No, 3DL does not use the video card when rendering...but one other benefit, you should now be able to do more in Studio itself, before movement becomes unbearable/laggy.
