DAZ get slower and slower lately

As the title suggests, the current DAZ version on my PC (4.22.0.15 pro edition 64bit)  has been getting slower and slower lately and working on a scene is becoming almost impossible over time because I have a delay of several seconds after every action.
I have these delays even when I switch the display to grid models

Can this be caused by too much installed content (over 3000 items), or is it purely a matter of the storage space required for a scene?

Over time I have accumulated tons of morphs, poses and add ons and when I load figures they are loaded with them. I'm not sure if they also take up storage space in a actual scene.

I tried to hide props in the viewport while working on the scene and hoped that would erase my problem, but even than I hade horrible lags after each action.

I also know that textures that are too large in a scene will eat up available space very quickly, but my problem also occurs when I only have two characters on the blank screen.
I'm not sure if I have something enabled in the settings that could be causing these problems.
I would also be generally interested in what good settings are to be able to work smoothly when creating a scene.

I own one:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X Six-Core Processor 3.60 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB

plus one:

NVIDEA GeForce RTX 2060 with the driver version. 546.33

I would be grateful for any tips to be able to work without delays again.

Posing and shaping can be affected by the number of morphs, as the ramifications of any chnage have to be traced through the properties. However, I don't think that would affect a darwstyle change. Have you checked how much memory DS (and other applications) are using?

One thing to keep checking is how much RAM DS is using. When making large scenes, where you add and remove items to the scene, memory might grow, so save, and restart DS can be a good solution.
Also some items have a high viewport SubD setting, whioch slows things down considerable if you have a lot of items.

It seems not that much to me...(see attachment)

I've had similar issues when trying to work with a new Genesis 9 or 8.1 character. Then when I start the animation process, DS just blinks out - gone.

When I go back to Genesis 8 and earlier the issue disappears.

Mhh ok I work with two G8.1 chars in this scene.^^

But what could cause this problems? There is not much different between them and Genesis 8 I think.

How many cores do you have? That would be one thread running almost full-pelt on a four core/thread machine.

Again, I am not sure why it would affect a chnage of Drawstyle but one thing that can be demanding is Smoothing Modifiers, with or without collision. I do have a script that will toggle them on/off, you could use that as a test https://www.dropbox.com/s/bwgw8ckbk46ysif/ToggleSmoothing.zip?dl=0

As I posted above I have 6 cores.

Yeah, I'm not sure, but the performance in my side was very noticeable, as I'm working my Genesis 8 Hero all day every day.

Wow, checking this page, it looks like there are a Lot of improvements that would demand a higher-end machine , but I'm not very technically savvy on that sort of thing. Until I can build a new machine, I guess I'm stuck with Genesis 8 and earlier. I can't work if DS keeps crashing on me.

In the meantime, I'm loving the ride! I have a Lot into my Genesis 8, and I still use the earlier generations for other people as well.

    I have a 2nd Gen Ryzen 7  - 8 core/16 thread, 64GB RAM and the RTX 2060 6GB

Oh, and I'm hoping that answers are found for you. Sucks when we can't use what we want to use.

Until those answers are found, try Genesis 8 or earlier and see if you have a better experience - maybe?

How high SubD do you use/have on your characters, clothing, hair (what type of hair), smoothing, collisions and there was an interactive setting in render settings that has an effect.

In general, 32GB's is not enough to keep windows from using virtual memory (disk space) with more resource hungry scenes and when that happens, one does notice.

Sometimes clothes / hairs etc on models can cause slowdown as well.

Especially if they all pile up keys on the timeline (sometimes for no reason) so you can try cleaning those up.

And there are other weirdness, like I've had cases where if a model is hidden it caused DAZ to slow down into a crawl. Only making it visible, or deleting made it snappy again.

Though, these things usually affect the speed when you're posing the models etc. If your DAZ is slow all the time then its probably running out of resources.

  • I too experiences a significant speed reduction with DAZ 4.22.  Just loading one bare character with takes much longer.  Even database searches takes longer than it did with previous versions.  Does any one from DAZ have an explaination or better yet a solution?

  • Try compressing the database...  Right click Smart Content Tab... then Content DB Maintenance.
