Crash Bug When Rendering With IRay

I already filed a bug report with DAZ on this but was just curious if anyone else experienced this.

I've been rendering with both IRay and 3DLight for some time with no issues.  All of a sudden, when I try to render with IRay, the render locks up Studio and I have to use the task manager to close out the program.  If I render with 3DLight it works fine.  I was rendering the same exact scene with both renderers for some time with no problem and then suddenly IRay just stopped working correctly.  The bug response report said that there is a known bug with IRay and Windows 10 (I'm running Studio 4.8.0.59 Pro on Win 10 X64) and that I have to upgrade to the 4.9 BETA.  Strange that the bug took months to manifest itself.

Anyone else have an issue like this (frankly--telling me to upgrade to a potentially buggy BETA Studio build to fix my IRay issue is not a great answer).

Update:  Figured out what the issue was and it was not Windows 10.  I went through all the items in my scene and I found I had loaded an old prop ( a poseable cable) that I was not using--it was out of camera range.  I deleted the prop, saved the scene and tried rendering with IRay and it worked perfectly.  So the question then becomes--can certain older props choke IRay and if so why?

  • Is it all scenes or just certain items? There are certain items - such as Starship Vampire - which are known to crash due to an Iray bug, the version of iray in 4.9 has fixed the problem. Not using the CPU, just the GPU, is a workaround if the scene will fit into your video card's memory. If it's a more general crash regardless of content then it may not be that issue - if you are using the GPU have you updated drivers recently?

Not necessarily the prop...but if you didn't convert the shaders on it to Iray Uber, at least, then the auto-conversion could be the culprit.

  • I've found that with some items if you have the "CPU" and "Graphics Card" boxes checked in the advanced renders settings tab it can crash DS on Iray renders depending on the settings for sub-d and Iray materials. I would suggest trying rendering with the "CPU" boxes unchecked.
