Crossing Generations

So, here's a crazy question. I have a character that I made with Gen 3, using Gen 3 morphs, etc. They look fine but I'm wondering... Is there a way to take this exact character and "convert" them into Gen 8?

I've tried recreating the character as a Gen 8, using Gen 8 stuff and I just can't duplicate them well enough. I doubt it's possible but I'd love to hear if it is.

Please note: I have no (zero) experience with Blender or ZBrush or any of that other stuff, so if the solution is programs like that, that's basically the same as saying No, you can't do it.

Thanks in advance.

Another possible choice of converter product:

    Awesome! Thanks.

You can also use the same textures without any conversion.

What improvements do you want out of G8? While I'm a big fan of XTransfer and use G8.1 almost exclusively, it's important to consider whether it's necessary to convert the character at all.

Assuming we're talking about Genesis 3, not Generation 3...

I love Riversofts products in general, but XTransfer is the superior product for this particular purpose. It's really quite accurate.

If I'm not mistaken, an element to keep in mind is that only PAs have the tools to convert HD Morphs: for end users, there is, as far as I can tell, no way to convert an HD Morph for Genesis 3 to Genesis 8.

Does the character use HD morphs? Regular morphs can be converted between figures, but not HD morphs. Only PAs have the tools needed to create HD morphs.

...it sounds as if the OP wants to be able to transfer characters that he/she dialled up in G3 to G8.without having to rebuild the character from scratch again as a G8 one

Not sure how XTransfer would handle this as it targets individual G3 morphs and/or morph folders that are selected om the script.  Saving a custom dialled character as a "character" or "shape" preset wouldn't work as those are saved in the :Library>Presets>Character/>Shape, folder. Not the Library>Data one which is where all morphs are stored

I tested that idea by saving a character preset of a custom G3 character I created but XTransfer does not "see" it in the Library>Presets folder even though it is there..

I do not have the G3 to G8 character converter so I cannot test that.

You can use XTransfer to transfer each individual dial you need (it can be done all at once) and the simply re-dial your custom character in G8.

Word of caution with the converters... If the converter converts individual morphs within the dialed-up character from one generation to another, there may be problems if one has the same morph packages installed for both generations (for example Growing Up)

My main concern was the textures/materials. And using Riversoft's 3 to 8 converter worked fine. The results weren't perfect but they got me close enough that I was able to keep moving forward. Which is all I ask for.

    Thanks all!

You don't need to convert the character to use G8 materials (excepting G8.1, but there are ways around that as well). The biggest issue with using G8 textures on G3 figures is that, due to the splitting of the eyelashes from the base mesh, G8 materials are mostly hierarchical, but you can re-save a G8 character's hierarchical material presets to regular material presets, and/or simply copy surfaces from a G8 onto a G3.

None of this is meant to discourage you from converting the figure to G8, and that's definitely what I would do in your situation, just that it may not be necessary for your purposes. If you have a huge library of G3 content and not much G8, it might be the better path for you to keep the character as G3. You can even apply the PBRSkin shader to a G3 and borrow an 8.1's detail maps.

If you don't want to buy any converters, try these videos. I used to use GenX, but it stopped working on my computer. I do use the Zevo converter from G3 to G8, but for other conversions, this method works well: https://youtu.be/ak6Nlfid5CQ?si=c0peS9UpjfOYcB_U

If you have a character dialed in, it may be less work to convert it into a single morph, then transfer it to the other generation: https://youtu.be/mZ1TOAqIzeU?si=eJjAWX4OHUAsW5wK

I've used these methods without any problems.
