Problems importing .obj file from Photoshop into Daz3d

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping this is a simple issue to solve.

My workflow is: Silo3d (modelling) -> Photoshop (texturing) -> Daz3D (rigging and final model)

I'm using Daz 4.8 studio pro and Photoshop CC 2015

Here is the problem:  Once I've finished texturing in Photoshop (3 separate meshes)  I export the model as an .obj file (3D/export 3D Layer). When I import the model into Daz all I see is a white bounding box. If I click in the box I see a yellow outline of the object.

Importing the same object into Bryce works fine.

I can work around the problem by exporting the photoshop file as a .dae (Collada) file, and that Imports into Daz fine.

Does anyone know what the problem might be and how to solve it?

Many thanks in advance.

Ravi

  • I would think it has something to do with surfaces being messed up, have you checked the surfaces when it comes into DS ? does everything look ok ? I never tried to import an OBJ into DS so I am not sure how well it handles them.

Have a peek at the OBJ file and compare it to the original one from Silo, have you tried to import the Silo OBJ before PS modify it ?

  • Hi mikael - If I click the surfaces tab, the surfaces appear but it's not picking up the diffuse UV map I'd applied in PS.  The object imports from Silo just fine (albeit without texturing).

  • As an update, if I create a primitive in PS, texture it and export it as an obj I get the same result in DAZ: an empty bounding box.

  • Check that the opacity isn't set to 0 on all surfaces.

Thanks Richard! The opacity had been set to zero in all cases. I put up the opacity to 100%...which has created a new problem. None of the texture maps imported into Daz3D all I get are the diffuse colours (sigh), it's never easy is it? Thanks though for solving the first step. I've checked the UV maps in Daz3D. They are there but there are no textures on them.

  • Whether or not an mtl file will be read seems to be touchy - I generally don't bother trying and just manually apply the maps through the Surfaces pane.

  • Thanks again Richard....I'd kind of come to the same conclusion after much fiddling about.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

    best
