Problem With Imported Object, Really Need Help With This!

So, I am trying to crate a room from scratch, and I decided to use blender to make the walls, doors, windows, etc.

I started by making a wall with cutouts for a dor and 2 windows, I did this in blender using the "difference" boolean modifier. The object looks fine in Blender, bit it gets all messed up when I import it into Daz Studio. I am exporting it as a .obj file. I have attached images of the object before and after.

Thanks much

Ion

  • Did you apply the Boolean modifier to the object before exporting it from Blender?

I seem to recall seeing something elsewhere in the forums about objects created using the Boolean modifier, but cannot find it now unfortunately.  It may be better to model it as 'real' geometry.

  • Yes, the boolean modifier was created and applied prior to export

See http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/949961/#Comment_949961. ; (If the link doesn't work, just do a forum search for 'boolean'.  Looks like it is to do with DS not handling n-gons.

Doesn't work for me either - see attached - triangular bit at the far side is not part of the mesh in Blender.

So, though it's not what you want to hear I'm sure, I think you'll have to forgo the use of the Boolean modifier.

And the first rule of making items for Studio...Don't use Booleans.  It's not pretty.

Instead, fully model the cuts...for windows/doors, it would be most easily done with loopcuts...

  • I think I may have figured it out. In blender there is an option in the export screen on the left that says "Triangulate Faces". Checking this corrected the problem.

I never used Loopcuts, but I would imagine not being able to use bollean operations would make life dificult when creating custom objects.

  • You can Bolean, but you need to be alert for issues - in the example above the opening were surrounded by the same polygon, and DS "filled in" the holw - polygons should ideally be quads, and should be convex (if you imagine putting an elastic band around the polygon there shouldn't be any gaps between its actual edges and the band).
