Lights behind characters "sometimes" not illuminating in iRay....

So it's a bit of an idiosynchrosy, which is why I am going crazy trying to figure out why it happens here and not there.

I have a character, with hair. I use a point light to illuminate the character; and I place a spot light above and behind the character as a hair light.

In Shaded Texture Mode; the light shows up as illuminating the character. In iRay preview - before it actually draws the first iteration; (all white model); it shows the light hitting the character; but on the first drawn iteration; the light is no longer drawn. Only the point Key light.

I am baffled by this. Any thoughts on why this happens?

Also; (sorry I come from a lightwave background)... is there a limit to the number of lights one can use in a scene?  I'm only using two; but it seems the few times I've added 4 or 5 or 6; I only get a few to actually render.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jack

PS I'll post screen shots in a bit to illustrate in case my write up wasnt clear. Thanks!

1: most programs will only show 8 lights in OpenGL mode but to render you can have as many as you want or the PC handle.

2: Iray is a photo real engine meaning you have to treat the camera as a real camera to some extent and adjust the Tone Mapping, i;e; ISO and f/stop when doing indoor, studio type scenes. But added to this the lights should be set up as real world lumens output, so the both, tone mapping and lights work together. Yes you could just increase the light intensity and leave the tone mapping at default. So the choice is yours, realism with realistic settings or just artistic using any settings that look good. The issue you are having is not enough light and /or tone mapping to low to allow more light in to the camera.

The other issue is that the spot light doesn't have a area light shape assigned to it. This can be done via the light parameters settings.

  • Still having same problem. Lights are assigned to a light shape. Tone mapping is correct. No matter what - only 1 light will work. I can turn others off and always get just one - turn on a 2nd light. Shows in Texture Shaded. Not in IRay Render. One light shows correct lumens. Turn it off and turn on another. Correct lumens from that light. Turn on both. Only one shows.

    Any thoughts?
