Why in the slider of a surface of certain parameter still has effect on the map?

For example, the base, the metalicity.
What the use of the map, if the slider still can change the property?

I am not entirely following, but with strength sldiers in general black will match the minimum value and white the current value of the slider with greys being intermediate values.
