Saving Character Preset for distribution

I have a set of characters I've created using dial morphs and I have them all saved as character presets. I intend to distribute them, but I understand that there are some steps I need to take before I do that. The Daz documentation I consulted here http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/creating_content/packaging/tutorials/saving_morphs/start doesn't seem complete. It talks about following certain steps exactly, especially reverse deformation, but then it doesn't tell you how to to do that.

Can someone tell me how to properly save my characters for distribution or point me to a good resource? I'm using the G3F base and G3F head and body morphs. What I'd like to be able to do is simply have an icon for the customer to click on to load the character so that they can then apply their favorite skin.

Thanks!

If they are dial-spun all you need to do is save a Shaping preset, that's the only file you need to distribute.

I tried that, but then you have to load a base character to put the shape to. So I load up G3F, apply the shaping preset and she comes out looking all wrong.

    Like this.

Is it allowed to distribute it as a character preset?

  • There's something wrong with this character in particular. When I try it with others, the shaping preset works... except that it doesn't account for scale. How do I incorporate a scale change into the shaping preset?

A character preset would be ideal if that's allowed — it's the format used for all the base characters you buy from DAZ. And it does exactly what you want, loads the figure, then the textures, then sets all the morph parameters, in one click.

So it's not allowed? Or are you saying you're not sure if it is, but it would be ideal?

    Yes, it's allowed.

  • Yes, it's allowed.

Thanks! You just made my day!!

  • Yes, a Character Preset can be shared - it's still just settings, which can be shared, rather than the actual morphs or textures, which can't be shared unless they are wholly your own work (or a merchant resource set used in accordance with its license).

  • Thanks so much guys. But I have another problem! In all my fiddling around, I somehow saved one of my morphs as the base Genesis 3 Female figure. So everytime I load up G3F, she is not the Plain Jane I'm used to seeing. It has affected all my character morphs which are built on G3F!! Argh!

How can I get G3F back for good?

Load a 'vanilla' G3F (no intentional morphs/characters) and then in the Parameters tab, click on "Currently Used'.  The offending morph should show up, at full 'on' (100% if it was saved as percentile or 1 if not).  Zero it and resave the morph.  You can also find the morph dsf file and edit that directly (but if you saved it as a compressed file, it will need to be decompressed before editing).

  • I tried that first suggestion and it didn't work. I reinstalled G3F starter essentials but that didn't work either. I can zero out the figure to get me back to G3F with no morph but I can't figure out how to save it permanently.

Does an active morph show up when you select Currently Used?

Yes, three. One is Mouth Realism HD, another is Navel, and the other is Render SubD Level Minimum. Moving the sliders has no discernible effect.

  • If I go to Genesis 3 just below currently used, then I can see the morph. But when I go to edit mode and delete it, it loads back up again when I load a new base figure.

Do the following in your operating system's file manager.`

Look in the <your content library>/data/Daz 3D/Genesis 3/Female/Morphs folder...and any subfolders in that one for that particular morph dsf file.  Then rename it to 'morphname.bak'.  Do this with Studio shut down.  Start Studio and load G3F...it should now load without the offending morph.

You can then edit that file or trash it...
