External installation?

Over the last few weeks, I have been having 'fatal error' issues with DAZ 4.8. Usually after adding several shaders and adjusting the length of the render. During the process the whole program shuts down. I did the same thing in 4.9 beta and haven't had any issues. So I'm not sure if it's the program or the volume of content my computer is trying to run. To my knowledge, I should have plenty of space on my system since I can run several programs and nothing is slowing down. Defraging helps somewhat. My main question is if my computer isn't able to process everything I've downloaded, I do have an external 2TB harddrive. Can I use that and what are good installation paths for 'installation' and 'applications' in the studio manager? I have tried this before and got mixed results. The program loaded, but it didn't display several large files in the work planes display. I reinstalled to my computer directly and the files showed fine. If possible I would like to use my external drive to free up space if that is the issue.

There shouldn't be a problem with that as long as the external is connected when you launch DS. Is this Windows or MacOSX?
It's windows.
my 2nd internal has the path H:\Studio\Content
It contains my data files, runtime, and paths to any 3D model I used externally.
It allows me to use the entire drive for content and completely back up the drive when needed, also being the same speed as my boot drive my Input Output (i/o)on the drive is as fast or if not faster than using the internal by itself since the internal is used for any system paging and the external is free to run without that need.
If you do run your data from an external drive the speed of the drive can become a major factor in the speed of navigating your content, loading and saving, and since there are hundreds of data files and textures associated with the file itself you can expect prolonged I\O operations when using an external drive with a slower throughput than an internal.
I used to have only DS4.8 principal program in internal disk C with windows 7, the rest of stuff was installed in a external disk with 1Tb, even My library folder. Now, I put win7 in an external disk with 1TB (now, my disk C is almost dead), DS4.8 is installed in this win7 external disk and both work relatively well and fast with content folders in another partition of the same disk. Even by-CPU-Iray rendering for simple scenes works ok. The external have usb 3.0 connection.
