Sharing BBQ Ribs

Just wanted to confirm that the output when rendering to rib from DS is actually considered a "render", and thus distribution is ok. Any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!

RIB not a render, it's data necessary for 3Delight to produce a render, but a render is a render is a render...

  • Actually I don't think that would necessarily be OK - a RIB file is a (static) 3D scene that anyone can render whether or not they have the content (textures aside, perhaps).

It is possible, but not easy to extract the 3D data from the RIB...but 3DL can create binary RIBS, which would make extraction very difficult.    Unfortunately, I don't think Studio has that ability, though.  The standard way Studio exports a RIB is ASCII

How does a render farm service typically work, if it isn't ribs (or something similar for non-renderman) that get transmitted? As far as dependencies go, both shaders & maps (if not embedded), would need to be handled, I presume.

  • Daz is OK with render farms - I have checked that. They get the RIB only for rendering, and the render goes traight back to the renderer.
