Weight mapping and d-formers

How do I get the vertex colors to show up when weight mapping for a d-former?

I can create the d-former, position the field and I see the red-to-yellow vertex highlighting.  Then with the d-former selected (base, field, or d-former itself - makes no difference) I can open the Tool Settings and choose the Node Weight Map Brush as the Active\Tool.  I can see a green circle within a larger red circle in the viewport, and 'painting' with this does seem to alter the influence of the d-former.  What I cannot for the life of me figure out is how to get the familiar blue-red vertex weights to show up.  Can someone tell me what I am missing please?  Can it be done?

(Dear Daz, Here's another area where documentation is sadly lacking.  There are docs pages briefly describing what the various options and buttons do, but no description of how to actually go about the task of weight mapping.  Perhaps I should throw all the questions that should be answered in documentation to tech support just to make that point.)

You should! It would be great if they responded by updating documentation. But, meanwhile....

I've seen Daz videos on weight mapping, but it they're  kind of old. I'm not sure how much still applies. Maybe they will help.

Thanks for the video links.  In the first one he has the pretty blue-red vertex weights shown already, and in the second one he by some magic I don't quite follow he 'selects the abdomen' and the weight map appears.

However, maybe there was a clue in there somewhere, because I have bumbled around blindly and figured out how to do it. I will have to write some notes for my own benefit to prevent me forgetting it, so maybe I will post it as a 'micro tutorial', though I've not seen anyone else puzzling over this.

You have to have a bone selected (either by clicking it with a tool that will select nodes before switching to the weight painting tool or by selecting in the Scene pane) in order to be able to select and paint its weight map(s).
