How do animators organize files?

Thre are a lot of files in my animation project:

--audio files

--dialogue pose presets

--a Daz file for each shot

--the rendered image sequences

--the after effects files where layers are comped

--the final premiere file where the shots are edited.

How do folks keep track of it all. Do you keep like files together? Or do you gather all elements for each shot into one folder?  I keep system and apps on one main drive and content and renders on a separate drive.

I keep everything together by project - not by file type. This obviously helps when working with others on the project, but has the added benefit of helping me find particular assets later on (I tend to remember what project I used the asset in before).
