After using the ERC freeze, issues arose with bending the calf.

I attempted to scale down a G8.1 character (a product persona model) by 50%, export it as an OBJ file, and then import it into a default G8.1 character using the ERC freeze method.
Upon doing so, I noticed that the character's calves exhibited the issue depicted in the image when bending.

ERC Freeze is just a way of linking properties - I doubt it was any better just using the raw adjustments. It may be that the rigging adjustments to shpae needed manual refinement,.or if you used morphs to do (some of) your scaling then exporting as OBJ and reloading broke any links to corrective morphs (which is one reason not to do that).
What a pity. Let me see if there's another way.
