Reverting back to 4.8—Possible?

I'm nervous about switching to 4.9 because I think (but I'm not sure about this) doing so will change my content library, so going back to 4.8 might be a disaster. And the fixed rendering settings for Iray might break my 4.8-optimized skins, which are mostly based on pre-Iray Genesis 2 skins. If I do some test renders and decide 4.9 isn't working for me, can I revert back? I have a number of characters that I value maintaining a consistent look more than I value the new 4.9 features (like the built-in store—ick! Built-in stores are almost always the begining of the end for software).

I imagine the fall back scenario is uninstalling 4.9 and reinstalling 4.8. You'll need to make sure you've got a copy of the most recent 4.8 install in case you need to run it to reinstall. You should also back up your 4.8 content mangagement database metadata and make sure that you keep a copy of that backup in a place where Studio can't mess with it. That way you can reinstall your metadata in 4.8 after you reinstall 4.8. I don't know if you can also export your UI preferences or anything like that so you can easily restore them if you have to reinstall 4.8, but it's probably worth looking into if you've made a lot of customizations to your environment.

4.9 won't break your 4.8 materials, but you may need to tweak them to look the way you want in 4.9 if they're IRAY materials, as they've fixed some bugs in IRAY for 4.9 that definitely would impact the results of some IRAY shaders from 4.8 (in a good way).

  • It won't encrypt anything or resort my files? That's my biggest concern vis-a-vis the change. I can restore the rest from backup, but I'd rather not mess with my library.

  • It might, I don't know yet either.  But until someone says from Daz "nope you can go back to 4.8 at any point" and someone says "yeah I did it no problem.  I don't think the upgrade is worth the risk.  Unless you have the drive cloned and can revert at any point.

  • Is there any way to get the 4.8 installer? I don't have one anymore.

I messed up when backing up Daz last time I had computer issues, and had to reinstall from the DAZ website. No way in hell I'm risking losing 4.8 by upgrading to 4.9 without a 4.8 installer safe and sound.

Is there a definitive list of what files and directories to back up on Mac so that a recovery to 4.8 is 'just a simple matter' of copying those elements back into place?  I guess that includes being able to shut down and restart the database.

As of midnight DAZ time last night your options for 4.8 went to slim. The stand-alone installers are no longer available. If you do not use DIM, that's it - done. If you DO use DIM you need to copy the DIM files for Studio and all the plugins to a different directory, before downloading the Studio updates.

4.9 uses only the Postgres databse - and does an upgrade on the database when you fire Studio up for the first time. So - in 4.8, export your user data and hang on to it somewhere safe. If you go to 4.9 and want to fall back to 4.8 later, you'll need to reset the database and re-import your metadata.

And I've posted a 'heads-up, grab your installers' warning at least 3 times in different threads since the 4.9 beta started.

Yeah, that's why I always keep a backup of everything.....  I still got last version of 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 just in case I need them someday. I learned never to trust a company to keep your backups for you back in the day. Redundancy is key, keep a backup online, and a physical backup or two.

It's good you did that (I'm not being sarcastic). However, I made the mistake of thinking I had a copy of the installer and I was wrong, so very very wrong (I feel really stupid). Maybe someone could upload the installer somewhere?

Yeah - been there. I did a download every time I posted the alert, TBH. (Me, Paranoid? well - maybe).

Put in a support ticket is about all I can suggest -- and they're going to be hammered almost as bad as the servers for the next couple of days.

No such thing a paranoid when it comes to backing up data. (I know better than to not have backups. I have 4+ backups of Photoshop CS5)

And I'll do that. Hope they're feeling generous.

Well i went and did something stupid like like usin DIM to install 4.9, thinking it would install next to 4.8, only to find it over wrote it.

well thankfully i had a back up of the 4.8 DAZ Studio installer and i had thought i had backups of my 4.8 plugins, Mimic Live, Dynamic Cloth Control and Measure Metrics. Sadly i figured out too late that i did not have these installers for 4.8 and the only installers for these in my product library are for 4.9 and will not work for 4.8. I put in a support ticket to try and get these, though, to be honest, i have serious doubts that they gonna give me these files or allow me to be able to access em again.

it very well could be that i'm not lookin in the right places. so if anyone knows where to find the installers for 4.8 and NOT the 4.9 ones i'd really appreciate it.

DS4.9 doesn't encrypt anything, it only decrypts encrypted files that are installed using Daz Connect.  Nothing you create or save is encrypted.

  • You could always test the water with 4.9 beta which installs alongisde of 4.8

  • Digital Anvil is correct I have 4.8 and 4.9 beta working side by side but when I first used 4.9 beta it fryed my meta data for 4.8 so I stopped using it but I will probably give the beta another look. After I save my content database first.

  • Well, I can comment a little.  I have 4.9 and never another rev (always been a poser user) and own Dynamic Cloth Control (says for 4.9 when I D/Led it.  When I first got it it worked fine so it does work in the latest version.  BUT (that is a big but), I can no longer find the way to get there anymore.  I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it (cloth control plugin) with no change.  Ofcourse the only tutorials are for previous versions of DS and rever to navigating through the View tab.  Well the View tab isn't there anymore.  As a matter of fact, in the dynamic cloth panel I only have 2 tabs, Garment and Panel.

If anyone knows how to activate those controls please yell.

    Thanks

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling should have fixed the standard issue (which is that installing a DS update will replace the control plug-in with the basic plug-in). It may be worth trying again - make sure you are uninstalling and reinstalling the right version (32 bit or 64 bit, Public Beta or standard) for the version of DS you are using.

Delete the downloads; then redownload the latest version of both; if you delete Studio and the Dynamic Plugin, you should then get the correct and compatible versions; install the plugin after studio.
