I'm starting to really like 4.9!

After I got over the major trauma of losing all my categories (not just my custom ones, but even the Daz ones) and reseting my database and trying Daz Connect, I'm really liking the Smart Content improvements. There are still a lot of bugs or things that don't work the way I expect, but here is what I do like about 4.9 so far:

  1. The Filter by Context option is fantastic. I can uncheck it and see clothing for other generations so I can autofit it.
  2. I don't have everything I own installed yet. I can fit a garment onto a character and click on that garment and look in Smart Content>Available tab to see if I own any textures for that garment that I haven't installed yet. Then I can click and install them. The Store pane needs more work but has great potential. It kind of shows me what other compatible things I could buy, but the prices are wrong (don't like that) and seems buggy because it showed my the same product several times in the list.
  3. Iray skin rendering is improved for those skins that have been modified for 4.9.

What have you found that you like?

Edited for spelling.

    All of the above.

I've been using the beta all along, and Smart Content has finally become the tool it should have been.

But someone needs to get that Librarian to work faster.

  • Barbult, were you able to restore your own categories after that?

I haven't tried yet. I didn't create a lot of custom categories; just a few. I have been using Daz Studio for several years and have created a lot of metadata for products that didn't have it and fixed metadata errors in existing metadata. That is what is in my user data. Now Daz is creating metadata for some of those older products. I'm not sure i want to restore my old user data (I did export it before updating, so I have the option.Good for me on that one!). I am going to start fresh with Daz Connect for now and see how it goes. I am doing all this on a secondary computer, to leave my main one alone for now. It still has good old reliable 4.8 and a buggy 4.9 beta with a database that was corrupted by beta bugs. If this experiment goes well, I think I will do the same on the other computer. 4.9 isn't quite there yet IMHO. I've written several bug reports already just since yesterday's release.

  • I see; thanks for your answer. I have categorized quite a bit, as well as created products for things gotten at other stores.  I guess that leaves me in wait-and-see mode.

I laso have products that I created for things from other stores and freebies. I'm hoping I can just reimport metadata for those things selectively and get them back. I haven't tried yet. As long as you actually used the DB Editor to export the metadata for the product you created, there should be a dsx file for that product in runtime->support. It should then show up as a separate line item in the Reload Metadata list.

I have successfully imported metadata for products I have created (well, purchased products that I created metadata for).

I think that you can get just the products that don't have Daz metadata when you re-import your user data, by unchecking the "User Data Overrides Product Data" box on the Import Metadata window. (Have not tested this.)

When you're in the Surface Tab and you click on a material, you see all the materials in columns instead of a (impossibly long) scrolling list. I have been wanting this without realizing it for a long time.

I don't notice anything different. Can you upload a screenshot of what you see that is new and good?

It used to be a scrolling list. This is clicking on the Diffuse Color of the surface for one of the items.

That's what it used to look like before it was a scrolling list — the format was changed several versions back. This is just a return to a previous layout which, IMHO, worked better and was easier and more intuitive to use. I could work with the scrolling list, but I never really liked it all that much, especially in a busy scene that used lotsandlotandlots of textures.

Thanks, I hadn't stumbled upon that yet. If you have lots of items and a small screen, does it still scroll?

4.9 without the connect is a good upgrade; no major additions, but some bug fixes.

I've not entered any passwords and its blocked from using the internet; so while nothing major in it from Daz, the IRAY render changes are welcome.

Not interested in trying the smart content - what I have works fine; it isn't because I don't like change, but because what I have now works fine. It aint broke, so not fixing. Haning said that, I would likely check it out if the DRM wasn't a part of it (although one easily avoided), I just don't want DIM to go away.

Poor thing has been working full time on it for at least 6 months.... This is actually the first version that has had Smart Content work properly for me so I have been really pleased.

    Connect does not encrypt files.

Really? 6 months already? It must be a bigger task than I imagine.

I hope to be fair,, then One thing I feel ,It seems interesting about ds 4.9 , is User can add new "group" with simple icon image.

I did not read all deatail of group, (and maybe it need more improvement).. anyway it is interesting, now we can add group with user made icon,

then sort asset by grouping. (though  at current, I do not starting to really like ds 4.9,,,^^;  I miss 4.8 actually,,)

the grouped figure is just I select which I will use,,

    I'm loving 4.9!
Expecially the new arrangment for the texture choice, no more scrolling purgatory!

The only thing I don't get is why they changed the "missing file" info window!

In DAZ 4.8, when something was missing, like textures, it gave me the option to look for the missing file... Now it simply says that's missing!

Any way to have it back?

Why don't you put in a featture request? While I like the current thumbnail view,  I think your suggestion would be useful as an alternate viewing style.

I'd like an answer to this too.

    Put in a feature request?

  • KhoryKhory Posts: 3,854

I actually think someone said that if a texture was missing from a product that connect will download it for you. Not much help if its one you created and then moved.

  • Put in a feature request?

Why would it be a feature request when it's something that worked fine a week ago?

In this specific case, the nobiax shaders have never liked my installation path - every time I opened the program, the first use would have to re-set the path.  Now it doesn't give me the dialog box to set the path any more.

The Day at the Beach ready to render scene has a very long list of missing files, none of which got downloaded by Daz Connect. It just popped up the error message. I think you are thinking of Daz Connect offering to install missing required products.
