Iray - how to preview dome?

I could've sworn there was a way to toggle the dome view while in preview (non-iray) mode. I've tried using 'visualize dome' and 'dome: on' but nothing shows in preview so I can get proper angle/rotation.

To se the Iray Dome you have to be in Iray mode. I use the Aux View set to Iray for quick viewing.

For other domes take the Preview view in Aux View outside the dome and make the dome transparent so the image inside it shows up.

  • If you mean the IBL that you set in Environment Map in Iray render settings then this cannot be seen until rendered. It's not an object in the scene (unlike the old domes that are intended for 3Delight). This means you have to rely on Iray viewport render mode.

Reality for Studio got round this by having a preview sphere which is an actual object in the scene and the rotation of this sphere is synced with the environment map in the renderer (Luxrender). The preview sphere itself is not rendered. I guess something similar could be done for Iray, although it would be tricky, if it is possible at all, to simulate the draw ground mode and the various translations that can be set in render settings.
