new content is on a lease not owned

so with the release of Aiko 9 being lease only availible only to Premi members for free as long as they are a member is this going to be the future of many characters and other products and if those of us that aren't Premi Members and are offered a product and still pay for it is it still ours or can it get removed on a whim like what is happening to gamers, and movie/music downloads bought. If some products are going this way we need just like the Editorial licensed products some way better way of knowing what they are so we can avoid buying them accidently if we want too

I don't think we own any Daz content. We purchase a license to use it.

This is technically true of all media purchased - music, movies, games, etc - but colloquially most people use "own" to simply mean "mine to play/watch unless I lose the file/disc/whatever" or "doesn't require phoning home to use and can't be taken away on company's whim".

That's a big selling point of Daz for me. Among other things, it means that if Daz goes belly up due to mismanagement, I can still use what I purchased. (I also prefer GOG to Steam, Bandcamp to iTunes, etc.)

Ohhh, I so don't like this.
    Makes me a "Never-Premier".

Yeah and physical media would kill to be able to do the same. Car manufacturers are already trying DLC models for some features... This is the bright future ahead where if you say something spicy your smart door will lock you in, disable TV and internet and commence automatic sentence :D

The question is, if this usage based on the license is restricted to being a premier member or if this license is irrevocable.

In the past, we paid once for a software to use it indefinitely. In the last years, payment models became standard like with Office 365. As long as you pay your subscription you can use it.

  • I like Premier because of the discounts and the extra plugins are useful.  However, needing to have the subscription to use assets is a big problem.  I understand there's been a paradigm shift lately to subscription based services, but when it comes to actual content, people like to know they've paid for something and it's theirs to use (with licensing restrictions for commercial use, of course).

If Daz wants to give us free products through Premier, make them Editorial Licensed products since we can't do much with them anyway outside of just having fun.  They should be free or close to it anyway.  And anyone who receives anything during their subscription should retain that product afterwards-renting this kind of content is not a good thing.

pretty sure the earlier Aiko's still work fine in the free version, and you will save yourself money on both the subscription and not buying a G9 character yes

...if DAZ wants to make me pay more monthly to buy the newest content, I will be saving me some money cheeky

Premier honestly doesn't worry me because I am not the target group buying stuff only when really really cheap and later on

I find it funny that you could have purchased Man Fridays G8 to G9 converter for under $10 in the PA sale recently... now it's been taken off sale and requires $20 a month.

My main concern is if they force people to install a newer version of DAZ Studio by making the old versions stop working. That could make the previously purchased unusable... again... but even if it doesn't, it may present an opportunity to fill the screen so full of ads that it becomes unusable. I used to be able to start a new scene without ads for twenty products.

Wouldn't be hard, have run into a couple software packages with extremely obtrusive and hard to get rid of "Update Available - Update Now" screens making it hard to get into the program. I wouldn't expect Daz to go that route, but then I didn't expect they'd do susbcription content either.

I have created a 'new scene' that I load instead of using the Studio New scene command, just to avoid those ads.

Also, keep older downloads of Studio when you install a new version. As far as I know, Studio doesn't phone home during installation, so you should be able to install and keep an older version without interference, if that's your worry. Eventually, Studio 4.21 or whatever will stop working in Windows 15 or so, but until that time....

Yeah, it's definitely been a divisive thing.  As pricey as the plugins are now, it's still less to buy it one time instead of renting it each month. Render Queue is compleely inactive now.  I never had all of them, but now I do, so to me it's an added bonus to the discounts, which is what I really find value in.  I do NOT like the "free" assets that are being added for Premier members only.

We are users---not owners. They told me, but I didn't listen. Frank Zappa: “At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."

This is the scenery being taken down. And I will be happy about it because no whining in public. In private? Silly rabbit. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Premier memebers should have a check box to control notifications at bottom-left of the New scene dialogue.
