Reorganizing library

Sorry if this has been covered before, I've looked but I can't find it.

I just started using DS, and my library is already becoming a mess.  I suppose that's Daz's fault for the weekend sales.  laugh

1.  I didn't notice when I re-installed DIM that it now points to \Users\Public instead of \Users\Me.  So now I have that library split.  Can I safely just move that over?  I'm thinking Public may be a better place, since it's a folder name not dependant upon the user.

2. Within the Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library folder, what can and can't I reorganize?

For what it's worth, my directory now is:

Converted
data
Documentation
Figures
Light Presets
People
Props
ReadMe's
Render Presets
Runtime
Scenes
Scripts
Shader Presets
Templates
Vehicles

I think I added Vehicles.  Looks like Templates got added that doesn't need to be there either.  I also have Runtime\Libraries, that seems to be an oops installing Poser there instead of the Poser Content directory.

  • Leave Data and Runtime strictly alone. Readme's isn't content and will be invisible to DS - either leave it or move it out entirely. Templates are needed in other applications if you want to create new texture sets, they aren't content and can safely be removed if desired. The others should be moveable but that can be risky if something has a hard-coded path.

And most things won't have absolute paths...but every once in a while something does and you won't know until you move it and it breaks.

Thanks guys, I moved a few things as a test.  It's helpful already, even though I haven't added much of my Poser content yet.

It was already driving me a bit nuts, My Documents had 2 locations Daz & Poser content, then Public also had Daz and Poser content, then there's Smart Content.

Still waiting for how to get my tags fixed, I can't write any or the information field either.

Daz and Poser formats aren't separate locations...they occupy the same space on the hard drive, it's just how the program looks at/for content that requires them to separate.  And Smart Content is just a database that references what is in the actual physical locations (My Library (user)/My Daz 3D Library (public).

Content Library should show things that don't have metadata, mostly Poser format, but not exclusively (most freebie content made for Daz Studio doesn't have metadata, too).  So there is no way around having to access content in more than one way.

It probably makes no difference differentiating the Poser stuff, but I thought I'd keep it separate to help me in my library management.
