    Strictly it means layered image Editor, the makeup sets use Layered Images (without the Editor bit). Layered Iamges can bea dded on top of an existing image, so in these cases ythe makeups can be applied to any skin rather than being variants of a particular texture set that includes makeup and so canot be used on another character.

    Is there a reason LIE makeup is still so prevalent, given that PBRSkin has a dedicated makeup channel?

    Other than, obviously, not everyone using PBRSkin.

    If you are mixing makeup, even when using the makeup channel you still need to use LIE.
