Why so much geometry for a rock?

Its called photgrammetry.
Also when you photoscan an object or scenery the textures are kinda baked in and if you reduce the geometry the textures usually get lost... at least that was an issue when I dabbled in it a while ago.
Shame. Seems very memory intense. I have a new nvidia card but still thats a lot of geometry for a rock.
