[Rosemill Moor/Moor Manor lighting] I've set the f/stop to 2.8 and the ISO to 800, the render is still much too dark, and lacks sharpness...any tips for a clearer render?

It is very grainy as it has too few iterations.
Are you using GPU or CPU?
My guess is CPU due to the number of characters unless you have a GPU with high amount of VRAM. And the CPU is most slower, than a GPU. You can look in the log to see if you are using CPU or GPU, and how many iterations there is done. The log is in Help > Troubleshooting > View Log (else attach the log as a text file, and people can look in it).
For a suggestion, I would try to decrease the load on VRAM, by optimixing textures, e.g. with https://www.daz3d.com/scene-optimizer
Best way to see your VRAM usage is GPU-Z, that is a freeware program.
Else you could render the image in phases, so phase 1 with some characters, phase 2 some others, etc, so each render can be done on the GPU. And when done combine in an image editor.
Recomended way to see VRAM usage is GPU-Z, there is a freeware program.
GPU, though the renders have been molasses slow as of late...yep, time to pull out the Scene Optimizer!
Okay, so I've invested in better mesh lighting, looking better already:
Yes, much less grainy.
But now you have a rather strong light from 1 angle.
I think, you could make that less strong and then add some more light in other places. It would give more diversity in the shadows.
It could be a ghost light to lighten the back of the room.
learning all the time, I'm just glad it's getting better if still molasses slow ;)
There is a light setting than comes with Rosemill Moor that turns on the lights. Change the Dome to night so that there is no light coming through the window. Then use Tone Mapping to get the lighting you want.
I just had a look at my Rosemill Moor and it isn't Iray so the lights don't work until you change them to Iray lights and change the surfaces for the building itself. Studio 4.23 doesn't like changing and has been stuck at not responding for a while now since I tried selecting everything :)
After working on this for the past two hours I have done two things.
1) Deleted the lights. It was taking too long to change them to work right :)
I tried making the Wick Emissive but it is all in one with the Candle so I am now using the Geometry Tool to isolate it and set it emissive using a candle flame image for colour.
Work in progress :)
I realised that I have it...
And I also have an Iray add-on for the set. So I loaded the night scene, and the point light set (there is also a mesh version, but didn't try that). There is an oddity, that both the set and the lights are scenes, so you need to merge them.
This is what it looks like in default state. It is not a fast set in the night version. This took 10 000 iterations.
I didn't have the Iray Addon. I have just purchased it so will try it out. Thanks for the heads up.
Right ~ I tried with Mesh Lights preset that I preferred. Default setting is set as Rendering with Quality Enable with which I stopped when it reached appr. 4000 iterations. The result seemed fine to me.
