movie magic, layers, huh?

I've got a scene (see screemshot below) where I think having a layer of stars to show through thie one would be fine.as well as dropping in some foreground under the figures. the Movie Magic book, or course READS like it may do for me, but i'd prefer hearing from someone who's used this technique...anyone got experience with this kind of thing?
