As in hair?
Oh, Yes as in hair! :)
Have you done any modeling before? What program? If just starting, you've chosen a very hard one to begin with.
I currently use Maya, been using maya for a couple of years but never really tried modelig a fro.
I have a project that needs one. :) Just needed some direction .
I was hoping someone might have had some information from you. I did a bit of googling, but most things I found really dealt with either straight hair or hair systems.
Saw this when I looked
http://www.3dmd.net/forum/3d-discussion-8295.html which suggest using fur/hair in Maya. I have seen a tutorial somewhere but it was a long time ago and it may not be up any more.
There's this which is more about african hairstyles than afros...

I find it pretty reasonable doing Afros with LAMH:
Create 10/60 hairs on a hair cap.
Curl about 2/3 of the way. A little sweep Z to get the hair to move a little backward, then judicious taper to close up the neck and shape. Some frizz of roots and a touch on the tips, some clump.
Been poking some more at LAMH lately, so here's example of what I just mentioned:
