Would any one be able to tell me which version of daz studio does not have Iray or drm in it? I've been out of the loop for quite some time and want to get started again. Thank you in advance.

4.7 was the last version without Iray.
4.8 was the last one without Connect.
4.9 does not technically have DRM...it is capable of decrypting encrypted content...so it is the content that has the DRM (of which there are only a few items available).
Or if you really want to be pedantic about it...none of them. Because, Studio has always had DRM...you needed to register it and enter a serial number. And THAT is DRM, too.
Thank you so much for your info ! It will help me out a lot.
I'm sure you know this but I'll mention it anyway because it wasn't clear to me at first. You can use 4.9 without the need to work online with Connect. You also still have the options of 3Delight and/or Luxrender via Reality or Luxus. I only say this because I don't use Connect or Iray either.
Or Octane...or even mcasual's Blender render scripts.
use 4.9
you will still have all UI improvements and bugfixes and NO obligation to use DAZ Connect or iray.
And if you wish to avoid Connect and the DRM goodies, then don't install the SQL components. This also seems to have the effect of preventing Daz from connecting to the server(s). You also won't be able to use the Smart Content either though.
DS doesn't need to connect to the internet to use Smart Content. The database server and client are both installed on your computer.
PostgreSQL is the database software used for Smart Content. It serves the same function as the card catalog does at the library.
Connect is a builtin downloader.
Indeed. Although with a few provisos. Both Octane and IRay come with a considerable price tag - especially if you don't already have the necessary hardware. And as an iMac user, I'm excluded from both (IRay in CPU mode is not worth the effort).
I've tried the scripts for exporting to Blender but I found I had to start pretty much from scratch with the materials in Blender (no simple task for a Blender novice). I just didn't like the look of the materials converted by the script. Admittedly, I am that novice and I didn't give Blender the time it deserves.
I'm happily using 4.9 without Connect stuff.
While I do a lot of Iray stuff, I'm ALSO having a great time with 3DL and 4.9, and, as I understand it, 3DL renders faster/better in 4.9 than 4.8. (Although some stuff got broken after... 4.6? Light flagging and a few things)
Look like people start to get tired of waiting on iray now, most new promo pictures use iray and many of them are only half finished, huge amounts of noise in them.
Just use 4.8 full and install betas only from now on. That way you can use new render upgrades and bug fixes. I don't use connect, or encrypted content (free or otherwise) either.
