How to find correct depth cue settings

I have used this technique to generate Z maps for compositing. http://lantios.deviantart.com/art/Z-Depth-Mask-Tutorial-in-DS3A-170794440
The difficult part is as described at step 7. For some reason you have to manually set the depth cue levels rather than have them just defined by the DOF planes. And there seems to be no way or guide to do it, other than tweak, render, tweak etc. And if you want to move the camera you have to do it all over again.
Is there a better way?
