Is it possible to not render parts of a background

I don't use DS very often so I'm not very knowledgable on a lot of features. I used to use an earlier version so I'm a bit lost in the more recent version location of features. What I'm wondering as a way of speeding up some render times, is it possible to not render a section of a background in a scene? Or render say only the figure, or parts of the figure specifically?

There is the "Spot Render" option; this allows you to make a selection in your viewport after which only that specific selection gets rendered. You can recognize the option in the iconbar as a camera with a mouse cursor on the side. You can also use the Tools menu => Spot Render.
Hope this helps!
You can Toggle the Visibility (In Render) For Everything you don't want to have rendered in Parameters (Or using the "Eye" Symbol on the Scene Panel
