Manual File Installation no Longer Working? (4.6 and 4.8)

Hey there! I know this is odd and most likely an error on my part, but I can no longer get manually installed content from .zip files to work. I've been working with Daz for a couple of years on and off. I recently went back to it after about a three month break. I'm still using 4.8 on my newer machine and haven't upgraded to 4.9 yet. Anyways, I downloaded some new content and moved some content from my old computer. I did everything correctly (open the .zip, drag the contents from the "content" folder into the My Library folder, merging the runtime folder, etc) and loaded up Daz 4.8. Of about fifty or so files, only one worked. A lot of this was Daz content I'd purchased a while back, such as Michael packs and whatnot. To test it out, I tried it on my old computer that still has 4.6, and it didn't work there, either. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for any help, it's greatly appreciated!

  • (I'd like to add that I know 4.6 is probably unsupported and outdated! I don't use it for anything other than just noodling around at times, and in this case, I mentioned it just because I was using it to see if the content would work. Mostly just looking for help with the 4.8 problem :) )

  • Also I'm adding onto this one more time! Can you have two versions of Daz on your computer at once? I'd like to try 4.9 but don't want to lose 4.6.

Sounds like there is a good chance that you've developed 'nested' folders...take a look at the content folders in you OS file manager.  It should be My Library (if that is what you are using) and one level down several folders (data, People, Enivronments, etc) and a Runtime folder.  In that Runtime folder should be Geometries, Libraries, Textures.  At no point should there be another Runtime or Content or similar.

Posting a screen shot with all the folders listed would be helpful.

The other potential problem is that the location is not mapped, in Studio... Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager.  Then expand the Daz format and make sure that the exact path that you are using for your My Library is listed there and that the same path is listed in Poser Formats, too.  If not, in each section click Add and navigate to where it is (stop at My Library or whatever you are using for the MAIN content folder).

  • Hi Mjc1016, thank you for your reply! I don't have any content or runtime folders within my runtime folder, but I'll upload a picture anyway since maybe one of the others is messing it up! Also, all my installations used to work fine and I never touched any of the program settings, so I'm not sure why it would suddenly stop working. All of my old stuff is there, however.

  • I just went and deleted all the pointless "readme" folders incase that would have been messing something up.

I still run 4.6 and installed and run the 4.9 Beta - you CAN have both safely installed as long as one is the Beta.

(I still use 4.6 when I want to do 3Delight renders with fully-operational AoA lights which were reported to be not fully working in 4.8 - I'd skipped 4.7 and so I skipped 4.8 too)

  • Thanks MelanieL! I agree with you, I skipped 4.7 and like to use 4.6 when I need to test something or make it quickly! Plus my older computer had a lot of problems with the Iray renders so it just didn't work out. Good to know! :)

    No nesting...

So check the CDM and the mappings...just to be sure.

Alright I checked it out, and this is what I currently have. I made sure they were the same, but they were already correct. ???

    Edit or F2...

  • Thank you, I updated my previous comment with a screencap of what I found. :)

Where are you looking for the content, in Smart Content tab or in the "regular" Content tab? Those items may not have metadata (if they are in poser format that would be likely) so they wouldn't appear in Smart Content.

  • No I'm not checking smart content, I'm just in the regular file-explorer type using the collapsing menus. In the "Content Library" tab to be exact.

Well I don't see why you wouldn't see them under Poser format then... sad

  • Me either! :( My old files all appear fine, but nothing new will work. I tried to install an old Michael bundle, an Olympia bundle, a couple of hairs, and a few items from Renderosity and none of them work. The official Daz items were bought on a different account I no longer have access to (as a gift from my work partner) so I don't have them for the install manager, either, which is pretty disappointing! :P

Double check in Windows and see if the files are actually in the folders...

  • Yes, everything is where it should be. I can even search for the textures/files/etc that came with the package and find them within the folders. :/

What is the full path and filename/extension of one of the items that isn't showing up?

    hmmm...

If you go to texture folder...(I'm assuming that Windows is making thumbnails of the image files), do they show a thumbnail...will they open in an image editor if you click on them?
