Using DAZ Studio to render CG elements for film

Hi all,

Is there a discussion or tutorial anywhere on using DAZ Studio to render elements to be composited with live-action? Matching cameras, using the live-action footage as background plate or lighting, exporting camera data from DAZ to something like After Effects or HitFilm? Is this a job better suited for Carrara? Either way, I'm in a class on HitFilm, and it'd be great to be able to extend sets with Poser/DS content, ideally using RenderMan/3Delight (I cannot afford Arnold, and this is just for fun for right now).

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Carrara and DS are not very good at this but it can be done, you are much better of with something that has the tools for this, if you want low cost I think Blender would be a much better choice (DS content can be exported), Lightwave has lots of support for it but a little more expensive, but if it's just for fun it sure can be done, Carrara has much better animation tools compared to DS, but can be a little wonky with the DUF support.

It's difficult to get it correct, even a simple thing like motion blur is difficult, if you have a mechanical shutter on the camera that did the original film for example.

Depth of field is another problem unless you have software to match the lenses.

currently there is no option for Renderman and while 3Delight is renderman complaint it's still a very feature lacking version of 3Delight in Studio possibly to make it easier to use for the non techie types who just want to make scenes.
For realism you can look into the Uber Envoronment and a handful of componements you can purchase from 3rd party developers in the Daz3d Store, also consider rendering solutions such as
Iray (built into DS 4.8 and up)
Reality or Luxus (which can bridge to LuxRender)
     or Octane.

Iray will offer you quick renders provided you have a well equipt Nvidia GPU with enough RAM to render your scene, you can combine Nvidia GPU's but not RAM otherwise you are limited to CPU renders. You can not GPU render with anything but an Nvidia Cuda GPU.

Reality and Luxus are inexpensive and LuxRender is free, Lux allows you to render to a farm of computers running Lux provided those computers have enough RAM to render as if they were rendering alone (similar to Iray GPU's dropping from the task if the scene exceeds their RAM but no farming is possible with Iray)
GPU rendering is also possible in Lux, it supports both Nvidia and AMD cards

Octane is fast and will use both Nvidia and AMD cards but it comes at a price.
