Combining obj, 3ds whatever

I downloaded this model of my hometown Adelaide

https://data.sa.gov.au/data/dataset/3d-model/resource/c9645482-7520-41c8-bc6b-b2ffaa74a576

It has almost 5K meshes!!!

they load in situ textured in Poser imported everything unticked one at a time, it will take me a year to rebuild Adelaide!!!

I batch converted them in Poseray but am no better off will all those obj files either.

and not sure kept their positions.

it crashes if I try to merge them in a Povray scene if I thought that would help.

A Blender script I found gave syntax errors and Blender  confuses me a anyway

I was hoping there was a python script for Poser to batch import them or a program that is not owned by Autodesk that would batch import so I can export one obj.

The aim is actually to get it into Carrara or DAZ studio, so far Poser very slowly a few blocks a day for a year  is my best option.

I did have one dumb idea, can I combine the obj files and a matching mtl in a text editor in some way keeping all the vertex co-ordinates and paths?

    I did find this gem

If you had two OBJ files and wanted to merge them, you can cut all the 'v', 'vt', and 'vn' commands from the second file and paste them at the end of the first. However, you cannot just copy over the 'f' commands, because they will have to have all their verticies offset. I'm thinking there has to be a tool out there somewhere that will do this for you, but I don't know of any.

might work for 3ds too, any Blender gurus who know?

I would also appreciate hints on settings and best way to get the resulting combined obj into DAZ studio etc, I seem to often miss half my scenes if its very complex or end up exporting it all zeroed, no textures etc from Blender, tried a few Sintel sets for example and the results were rather underwhelming, I not even been able to export one frame of a fluid sim as an obj, it just does the damn iconosphere at the start!

the only guru's here are the meditation errors the forum throws (I still think it's running on a Commodore Amiga BTW)

I'm DLing this now and will attempt to open in Blender and export it back out which as worked for me on crazy large OBJ things.

I used search copy paste  to put all the 3ds files and textures in one folder and batch  converted to obj using Poseray but it gives me an error in Blender trying to add the directory folder

Importing one at a time in Poser is gonna take me all year laugh

load them into blender - use File > Append if they are blender files already, otherwise just import.

Then export them - select the ones you want to combine together and check the box on the export screen saying export selected only.

Thinking laterally, have you considered moving to a smaller home town? laugh

    you are close ........South Australia

and I can get them one at a time into Blender like I can Poser

there are almost 5 000 buildings! each a separate 3ds file

I was looking for a batch import solution but sadly no software I can afford can do it

3D studio MAX of course has a MAX script to do it, saw that on Google, might need to download this year's trial sometime to try
