Because the User Guide is for 4.6 and the embedded video tutorial for installing content is for D/S 3.x, which was very different from D/S 4.x, any version. WTH?!
I have been using Carrara 8.5 for several years so am not familiar with any D/S version after 3 Advanced. I decided to try D/S again, as it seems there is little prospect of Carrara support for anthing later than Genesis (1), and I did enjoy D/S 3 Advanced.
Although I have my own Content Folder that I use with Carrara, I want to use the location D/S defaults to for Daz because there is a lot of older content I don't use. (Even if I did want to use my custom folder, I can't figure out how to point the program to it.)
I have installed Genesis & Genesis 2 starter essentials with DIM, but since everything shows as having been installed, I have to tell DIM to "uninstall" the files first,e ven though I have never installed them to the default folders, so just adds time.

I'm not sure I understand... You installed with DIM to the default location. Then, things show up in DS as installed, which is correct. Am I understanding that correctly?
The default location for DIM(Daz install manager) is
c:\Users\Public\Public Documents\My Daz3D library
(even though the options menu in DIM will show c:\Users\Public\documents\My Daz3D library the folder in Windows explorer is Public Documents, win 7 and up)
Mapping content folders
To map additional content folders, such as you1 custom library,
1. Either select the content library tab, and right click, selecting Content Directory Manager. Or Edit>Preferences>Content Library>content library manager.
2. Select either Daz studio format, Poser Formats, Or other, depending on content type mapping.
When selected the format type will be highlighted with an orange box around it.
3. Click on the ADD button to the left
4. Navigate to the particular folder you wish to add, and press Select Folder
The selected folder will now be visible in daz studio, as long as there are compatible files within that directory.
