4.8 and 4.9 side by side, content management is an issue.

After upgrading to 4.9 via the DIM, I used a bitrock version to re-install 4.8 only now it sits in "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4.8\DAZStudio.exe" instead of just "DAZStudio4". Copied the dll files it says 4.9 was missing, now both open up as requested and I can even open them both at the same time. However although my custom categories show up in 4.8, none of the content I already categorized does. Are they using two different databases or ...?
Basically, what I want is to use 4.8 for installing non-daz items, and categorizing them using the "Scan Known Directories" command, but ultimately I will be creating in DS 4.9. Can they use the same database? or is there a way for me to keep updated versions of each and then overwrite the 4.9 one with the 4.8 one? Best solutions? Helpful tips? Anything would be much appreciated.

DS 4.8 and 4.9 use the same database but different tables. So 4.8 won't see categories created in 4.9.
4.9 migrates data from the 4.8 tables after install but I don't think there's anything planned to keep the tables synchronized after that since having 2 versions of DS installed is not supported.
Keep 4.8 as your main and instead use the beta version; that might work better for you. I have my system set up like that and don't have issues.
OK I will give it a shot. I dont mind wiping my database as I am not one of those people that needs to have everything installed at once. I used to be but it was soul-draining work, Now I just install things as I get ideas and Daz Connect makes searching through those products so much less painful. Just so ya know Leana, I actually reset the DB when 4.9 was installed and now that I have 4.8 side-installed it did recognize and display my categories I made in 4.9, the only problem is that they all come up empty. Might have to do with the way I customized my content libraries which I can discuss further if anyone is interested. Thanks again.
4.8 and 4.9 databases share the list of categories, so if you create a category in one it will show in the other, but it will be empty.
Yeah, exactly the problem. I have 4.8 and 4.9 beta running at the same time now, but it doesn't fix my problem with easily installing & locating & categorizing non-daz content because when I do it in 4.8 it doesn't translate over to 4.9, which is the software I want to be ultimately using. Should I be using some kind of export/ import feature for the database? How would you do it, pcmike? If you needed to install non-daz content, locate and categorize it in 4.9 how would you go about it. Really this is the only thing holding me back from going all out with 4.9
Side bar: using beta 4.9, is there anything I would be missing out on in comparison to the full 4.9?
Non Daz content you need to install manually; there are a number of us who install Daz content manually, and some do more of that than I do. Any content I install is visible in both 4.8 and .9; I don't use smart though - and have it completely disabled.
Install and categorize the new content in 4.8, then Content DB Maintenance > Export User Data. Then in 4.9, Content DB Maintenance > Re-Import Metadata (you can uncheck everything except User Data).
Hi Mike, been away from the forums with responsibilities. So will your suggestion merge the two databases? I don't want to overwrite anything in the 4.9 database. Although as I am writing this I realize that if I do all of my Gen4 categorizing in 4.8 then import to 4.9 it shouldn't really interfere with anything in 4.9 because 4.9 would all be Genesis-based or items with metadata. Is that assumption correct?
I really hope for a day when I can manually add items to the Daz Content Library (via zip) and then open the Content Library pane and tell it to scan for new content, then it returns with some way to indicate folders have new content. Has there been any further development on this?
Lastly, I remember you saying in another thread that new items will have a "new" tag applied to them, but again not sure how to do that as none of the items I install outside of the smart content/ daz connect are tagged as "new". Any help with that?
