What exactly are you needing? If you know how to model, then the only difference is on the daz side as far as rigging/weights/etc. If you don't know how to model then you'd probably want to figure out what app and such you plan on working with and at least learn the basics first.

You will definitely need good modeling skills. You aren't going to find much. There are some basic tutorials. You will just need to search the web and YouTube. YouTube is probably your best bet. What modeling app do you plan on using for the models. There is quite a bit that goes into creating hair and cloths.

OT: I just made an OT comment on this issue in another thread, so I suppose another wouldn't hurt.  I'd like to see the issue approached from the exact opposite POV: a learning series geared toward modifying existing DS content. Converting V4 clothing to G3, improving fit, adding morphs, altering a conforming figure, etc. I don't want to learn a whole suite to do this stuff. I'd much rather see someone else doing the tasks I want to do, and learn a suite that way. Seems a waste to learn a bunch of stuff I might not need, and seems more efficient to learn in bite-sized pieces. Learning an entire suite defers payoff too far down the road.

I suggest look up anything by SickleYield. That woman is a goddess when it comes to refitting clothing among generations.

To do original morphs, original hair, or original clothing you will need to learn Blender or Hexagon at a basic level. Search for Darren Lile or David Ward on YouTube. You can learn the basics is 2 -4 weeks. Practice will make you good at it.

Oh yes - completely agree. I've made so many false starts only to be overwhelmed by the learning curve. Not knowing where to start, when to model, when to sculpt, when to morph or when to rig, JCMs, weight mapping, how to create textures for existing models, 3Dpaint apps or Photoshop/Gimp ... on and on.

Just want to add that it doesn't have to be Blender or Hexagon, those are just free packages, of which a lot of people will also vouch for Wings3D. Most commercial modeling programs are also very capable of creating items.

nonesuch00, Thank you for your professional answer to my inquriy. I actually have Blender but normally use it for other purposes. I have reviewed Darren Lile's videos and will be starting with his tutorials. I also, breefly looked at the specs for Hexagon but have decidedf to continue to use Blender. :)

Cool, that'll get you far enough to do DAZ morphs, hair, and texturing in a couple of months just stick with it. For hair, I recommend you learn nVidia HairWorks and use the free 3rd party Blender converter/exporter for Hairworks (search Blender & Hairworks & you'll find it). Also, beyond the basics and once you finish the basics from Darrin Lile, there are also specific tutorials for Blender making hair & clothing & textures and lots of them on YouTube. Also, for hair in DAZ Studio directly there is the Look at my Hair product for $50.

CG Cookie is a great resource for Blender. IMO it's the best, but that is just my opinion. Another good one is Blender Guru.

They have a number of free as well as paid tutorials. http://cgcookie.com/blender/ or http://www.blenderguru.com/video-category/tutorials

Both are great...although CG Cookie's output seems to be a bit lower (at least the free ones) recently.

    Yeh?

Not been paying attention; I started subscribing about four or five years ago, although not taken advantage this last year. It wasn't expecsive, especially considering it was for a year. The quality was amazing.

Man, is Wings still around? I played with that YEARS ago. It was the easiest modeling experience ever. Well, until I tried Sketchup.

While learning this and then approaching my search from a different angle. Found a tutorial on how to make hair in Cycles via Blender

    http://bit.ly/22x2fNZ

I'm not sure what sort of use I can make out of this yet since I'm still going throught the turorial but for now I will put it as a "nice to have" skill utnil otherwise.

  • All that being said, I need a specific hair for a G8M that I cannot find in DAZ or Rendo.

I need a military top cut with close shave on the sides and back AND a mustache w/ beard (beard shaved down the center 1" wide.
Can anybody help with sugestions or pointers to the product?
