Can't open a saved .duf file

I'm running DAZStudio 4.5pro on my Mac Mini. For some reason, I can create a scene using DAZStudio 4.5 and save the file - which saves as a .duf. However, when I try to open that file back up, I get an error "An error occurred while reading the file, see log file for more details". It doesn't matter if I even open the app, and save the defaulted Genesis character. If I try to open that file back up, same error. I can, however, open .daz files, created using DAZStudio 4.0. Can someone please help? I tried submitting a ticket, but haven't heard back for several days.

The obvious question is, what does it say in the Log File?

Help > Troubleshooting > View Log File. That should tell you why it can't be opened.

I have no idea how to read those things. I tried to include it as an attachment to the previous post, but was alerted that it wouldn't accept it. I converted it to a .pdf and still no joy. I'll include the first few lines in this post. If you know how to read it, any help would be appreciated. Thanks. It's like 118 pages long so I didn't want to include the whole thing.

Put the log file into a text editor, and look for the name of your .DUF file that it is trying to open, and see what the error messges refer to. Is it looking for an itme that it can;t fine or something like that?

Just post the small bit after it is attempting to load the file..

Note that text is added to the end of the log file whenever you do something or a plugin does something automatically, so the part of interest would be at or close to the end of those 118-odd pages. The beginning of the file only keeps track of how the program starts up and whether all plugins are in good working order (or otherwise...) — this section can be quite long, and repeats every time you start up the program.

Some people recommend that before the next time you load D|S, delete the contents of the log file. The next time you start up and try to load a scene, the log file should contain only the (probably long) startup sequence followed right at the end by — hopefully — some clues to your problem.

You can even open the log file, delete everything in it, and sve and close just before trying to load your file.

What is the first file path listed in Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager under DS formats?

First, thanks so much for all of your help and replies. I deleted everything in the log file, tried to load my .duf file again without success and checked my log file. It was only two lines long and as follows:

    *** Scene Cleared ***
Error reading file, see log for more details.

So I guess I'm SOL huh? I even tried reinstalling DAZ Studio 4.5 pro - still no luck. The only think I can think might have happened is that I recently upgraded my ram in my Mac Mini from 8gb to 16gb. Mac Mini doesn't officially allow for 16gb, but several have made the upgrade I found while doing my research. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it. My next thought is to reload 4.0 and see if I'm having the same issue with this. If not, I guess I'll have to use an older version to do my work. But if I'm still having the problem, I'll have to punt.

If anyone has any further suggestions, they would be much appreciated. Again, thanks so much for the feedback on this forum.

Ds 4.0 wont open DUF files anyway, but if you mean to try saving as a DAZ and see if that works, that would tell you something anyway. The log file says 'see the log file for more details', priceless!

Can you save anything at all? If you tried, say a building, would that open again? Are you saving lights or cameras with the scene, if so, try saving without and see if that works for now?

Yes, I know that .duf files wont open in 4.0. Fortunately, I haven't created a lot in 4.5, so I figured I could just start over again in 4.0. To answer your question, I'm able to create in 4.5 pretty much anything. From simple objects and characters to large scenes with multiple lights and cameras. Doesn't matter what I create, I can work with it fine and save it no problem, but when I try to open it again, I get this error. So unless I plan to create my entire scene in one sitting and never revisit it again in the future, it doesn't seem as though 4.5 will work for me.

I just reloaded 4.0 and everything seems to be working fine with that. However, I'm not sure how many of my assets are 4.5 specific. I guess I'll find that out as I go along. But at least I'm happy that I can use some version of the software. I am dismayed to see that my problem with 4.5 isn't a common one. It was my hope to get a quick and simple answer and be back on track.

This would really need a bug report. If you give as much information as possible about your setup, operating system etc, it might be a help to the devs. The Mantis report area requires a different login to the normal DAZ 3D site. If you don;t have one, a couple of moments will get you a login. You can probably use the same user name.

Could you help direct me to the "Mantis Report" area that you mentioned? I'd like to give that a shot.

My problem occurred after Windows (thats windows7) Update. I couldn't even open Studio at all. I had this situation as described in this post:

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/13323/

    I followed the directions there.

I can no longer apply any of the material presets (.duf) files that I made composed of my textures. I can't redo the presets (make new .duf files) and open them either.

However, 4.5 opens the original .mc6 files just fine, but none of the material presets that I made unless I made them from original textures that came with the model.

I made a new preset, as you can see in the log. It appears to me that only the thumbnail was made and not the actual duf file.

The only solution is to revert back to 4.0?

I see this OP was from 2012. Is this problem rare and is there a fix for it? *crosses fingers that there is*

You really should have started a new thread on this subject.

Tdlmake is used when you render a scene, it creates lower resolution textures for the render, it has nothing to do with saving a scene.

When you get everything the way you want it, go to Save As > Scene (or Scene Subset) and that should save the DUF scene file for you. Does that not work?

Where it says 'Error reading file, see log for more details.' are there any more details in the log file, or is that it?

Can you please post a step by step of what you are doing, for example, when you start DS4.5, are you loading an object, then trying to apply a preciously saved material preset to it? Is that what is throwing the error?

"You really should have started a new thread on this subject."

I have the same issue. I have always noted on forums, generally thats the done thing.

"When you get everything the way you want it, go to Save As > Scene (or Scene Subset) and that should save the DUF scene file for you. Does that not work?"

    Nope that doesn't work.

"Where it says 'Error reading file, see log for more details.' are there any more details in the log file, or is that it?"

    Thats all that it says.

"Can you please post a step by step of what you are doing, for example, when you start DS4.5, are you loading an object, then trying to apply a preciously saved material preset to it? Is that what is throwing the error?"

    1) After I straightened the mess with the "child" error problem (see my OP) I start Daz 4.5 (64bit)

    2) I create my scene

    3) I tried to use one of my material presets I made last week. It bears mentioning they worked fine last week.

    4) I get the "Error reading file, see log for more details" message. When I read the log, it says "Error reading file, see log for more details". That is all. I tested this by deleting everything in the log file and starting the process again so I could provide the log file above, start to finish, to depict the order of events.

So I tried to create a new mat.

    1) Created my scene.

    2) Applied my textures.

    3) Saved the preset.

    4) Used the material presets that came with the item

    5) Tried to use my preset

    6) Error reading file, see log for more details

    7) I read the log file. It said "Error reading file, see log for more details"

I can't stress enough that Daz 4.5 worked great a couple of days ago AND these same presets worked fine a couple of days ago. Its only after this Windows 7 update that I have issues.

I did what was prescribed as the solution here http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/13323/.

Now I cannot use today what worked fine before.

I think,, He hope to make material preset files with new texture (he setted) for the leaffs or tree.

then I want to know how he try to apply material preset .

if he try to load material preset without selecting the prop or figure?

when I try to load material preset duf without selecting the prop or figure,,
    it must cause the erroer.
"Error reading file, see log for more details."

when apply material preset,, we must need to select the figure or prop in scene. (which you applied new material preset)

because it is preset,, there is no geometry data.
there is only path to the texture and the values of each material property, I think,
(though I did not check material preset duf , how record these proeprty,,)

(sorry,, if it is not his problem)
