Why Does Iray Take Forever to Render Movies?

I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 GPU, I am using DAZ Studio 4.9, on Render Settings > Advanced, I have:

Photoreal Devices: GeForce GTX 770 (checked)

OptiX Prime Acceleration (checked)

Interactive Devices: GeForce GTX 770 (checked)

and it takes 8 or more hours to render 120 frames.

In fact, it starts out rendering frames quickly, then gets slower and slower and slower until it come to a maddening crawl.

I am using Windows 7 Pro and I am running DAZ Studio, and no other application.

wtf?

  • Plus, I have even decreased my Convergence to 75% when I run at 95% for stills.

    Just wtf...

Commercial studios throw render farms at the problem, and it takes time; obviously a 770 is a long way from a render farm.

I usually use just the graphics cards, as the other options can either make no difference, or take longer - not always though.

That it starts faster and gets much slower could be an hint that your GPU drops out at some point and it switches to CPU only.

Have you had a look at your log file. This is very informative most of the time.

It is a good habit to allways have a tail -f equivalent on the log file in the background when rendereing and look at it from time to time.

on my Windows machine I use the free program Baretail

On OSX I use tail -f in the console

  • I *wish* DAZ Studio, et al., were available under Linux... I miss my $ prompt... Only have that at GoDaddy these days...

I'll try Baretail right now. Thanks!

  • My virus system blocked it.

OMG! 120-frame animated render with 3 actors in 4 hours!  BAM!

Martin, I knew you could render it faster! Threads about this easy way of speeding it up (and cleaning up frames) always seem to get lost around here. I'm glad DAZ finally did a tute so I didn't have to keep digging out old partial threads to show users.

Try to animate in Cararra or even run it in Unity and then do a screen cap for the duration of the animation. With Unity we know it won't be iRay quality but it should be OK.

  • nonesuch00, I'm actually just spinning my wheels. I have Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya but I need the time to study. I don't have any time right now. I only play with DAZ Studio when I am braindead and can't get to sleep. Plus, I can't find porn as good as the stuff I make for myself. wink

well if you like pricey software and fast I would suggest iClone 6 pro and 3Dxchange 6 Pipeline and use it to import your DAZ stuff, also apparently good for re-export to 3Dstudio MAX too, there are many Max users on Reallusion forum.

  • I got the software free. I was a student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Plus I don't really need to import DAZ stuff. I want to make Draenei, and I apparently need to make them from scratch.

    Them female Draenei. Heartstoppers.

  • What would really be fun is to release some music videos, based on 70s & 80s Funk music, with Draenei and other alien life forms as the performers.

omg, you should see the dummer gal I have in my mind.

Wish I knew how to make some money off that. I'd cut the original artists in.
