Subdivisions and displacement

How does this work? I see the SubD settings the displacement section of the Uber shader-- but despite have a displacement map, I don't see anything happening. Do the SubD settings affect undisplaced mesh, too?

I am used to Lightwave SubDs (aka "subpatches") . . . can someone point me in the right direction here?

    Yes, in Iray displacement uses actual or SubD vertices. That control increases the polygon count witout further smoothing the mesh, as opposed to the object parameter which both adds resolution and smooths the shape.
