Trying to do a clean/fresh install.

With 4.9. I wanted a fresh start, All new default directory structure instead of my custom stuff. I decided to bag it and let DS do what it wants. This isn't the only thing I do with my life and I have better things to do than vainly attempt to redirect the flow of glaciers.

Anyway, I've uninstalled 4.8 and installed 4.9 but had my old files show up with the custom directories. Then uninstalled 4.9 and regedited all daz entries from the Windows registry and reinstalled 4.9 and seem to have two... anomalies.

First, in Smart Content I don't see all the stuff I actually own and I'm not certain if I'm supposed to surmise that all of my products have yet to be converted to Daz Connect or not, even though I'm looking mostly for Genesis 3 content (I've got quite a bit).

Second, I've got a great deal of content, or at least pieces of content listed or named that has iconography of a picture frame containing an upside down yield sign with an exclamation point and I don't know what to make of that.

And as an addendum to the second item I've got things listed that are in color that I didn't install (Color indicates installed by what I've determined.) and when I click on them I get their individual components again with the yield signs.

So, all I wanted was a fresh start with no baggage and Daz doesn't seem to want to enable me to accomplish that. Any suggestions?

Did you use DAZ Install Manager (DIM) to reinstall all your stuff to its default location?! I gave up on Smart Content years ago, it's too dumb for me. Did you reset your database after you uninstalled stuff?!

My life is simpler now that I totally ignore the database and DIM. I've been installing from scratch for over a decade.  I have one basic "runtime" that I call "Ron's World." Everything is orderly there.

The database that controls everything except the plain D|S Formats and Poser Formats content views isn't stored with the D|S program or with the content. Uninstalling and reinstalling everything still leaves this database intact (except now it might not work because the content files might not be where the database thinks they ought to be). If you want to completely remove all the database stuff and start fresh, you must go into the database controls (Content Library tab, Options button, Content DB Maintenance) and tick the Reset Database box.

This is what still bugs me. DAZ chose to get away from art, and concentrate on creating software and a database that doesn't work. It just creates way too much trouble for artists.

The database system does broadly work - there are individual products that have issues (and daz is working through those), and there's a known conflict (possibly now fixed) with Zone Alarm. There can also be issues when the location of items on disc is changed.

I very much agree with you Ron.

I do not like that daz connect, I do not like smart content.. I install most still by hand because that way I know what goes where.

Life could be simpler if people would not try to make the easiest things so much more complicated with things that are not needed.

    What is Smart Content for?

The normal Content folder has everything where it should be.

It would be easier to accept DIM or Smart Content if DAZ took the time to fix all the previous installers that had scattered content all over creation. It's easier to organize than it is to draw maps to find the scattered content.

I actually am very happy about all the work DAZ3D did with DAZ Connect so far.

I realize that this topic discussion may have gone in another direction than the title suggested.

    But just in case:

If you want a fresh start with DAZ Studio 4.9:

    Preparation / Uninstallation:

    - make a backup of everything you would need to reinstall DAZ Studio 4.8 again

    - uninstall DAZ Studio 4.8 and all products, plugins and software in the DIM and delete the packages.

    - manually delete all DAZ Studio related folders that may contain some remaining files

    - run CCleaner and clear the registry

    Installation:

    - 1) Use the DIM to download only the DAZ Studio software and the plugins

    image

Example: 15 plugin and software files are installed with the DIM.

    - 2) make sure that you set up the proper paths in the preferences of the DAZ Studio Content Directory Manager

    image

    - 3A) Use the DAZ Studio Smart Content Tab to make selections of products and install them by right clicking on the selection and Install

    - 3B) Or in Daz Studio Pro BETA - version 4.9.2.55 and use the new Install pane to make selections of products and install by clicking on the Install selected button

    image

Make selections with the Mouse, holding CTRL, SHIFT, buttons.

    - - -

Now you can find all your installed products in the Smart Content Pane.

I can't get it off my damn computer!

  • This form is a relic. however i have been looking around in 2020 for a method to install this nice chunk of assets i have acquired. and this form was about DIM to start with, so technically i guess im in the right spot. my question is a simple one...is there really now way to use DIM or some new feature from Poser/DAZ to simply select my own "non" purchased assets, then install them.... i find it challenging to even install 60 at times before something goes wrong. i have nearly 800 assets and manually unzipping 800 files sometimes more then once in a zip.... is frustrating to say the least if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. thanks.
