Building new PC..so a few questions

edited April 2016 in Daz Studio Discussion

Hi all.. well I got the basic machine now and will be upgrading it.. it's not the best..but better than what I have been using.. I plan to have 16gb ram (ddr3) quad cpu (only 3ghx though 12mb L2..as thats as far as it will go) 3gb hard drive, and a 2 gb Geforce 730 ,, so first off it has Windows 7 pro 64..should I go ahead and get windows 10..or is win 7 good enough? And what renderer should I use that would be best for this new setup? Thanks :)

I think you mean 3 TB harddrive?

WIndows 7 Pro (64bit) should be fine.

By renderer do you mean Iray? If you can, use Iray with the GeForce..

thanks for the reply reelyor.. yes I meant 3tb..lol  I actually like win 7 anyways.. wi 10.. is probably typical as a new one..lots of bugs yet to work out.. I actually tried the iray..but it seems pretty slow compared to the standard.. but then again..that was when using an older systerm.. do any renderers utilize physical ram?

if it's a GPU render it uses the GPU RAM on the card,

if the RAM exceeds what you have on the card it will no longer use the card and switch to CPU render and CPU RAM (generally a lot slower, but no loss in quality)

if you have more than one card, say two cards with 4GB VRAM and one with 6GB VRAM all 3 cards will assist with calculations as long as the scene does not exceed the VRAM requirements of a single card: e.g. If your scene uses 4.1GB VRAM the two cards with 4GB VRAM will no longer assist with the render and pass the job along to the card with 6GB VRAM to render by itself, if the scene uses 6.1GB VRAM  then that card will pass off the job to the CPU and hopefully your computer has more than 6.1GB RAM so it can continue the render.

My observations on Iray are that it counts a GB as 1024 MB...
