But how long do you need to uninstall something cleanly or install a product update....

I never uninstall anything. And I can't remember the last time a product was updated.

Wellll - Connect only saves me money ... as easy as that. Cause I don't buy those. *grin*

Where is the new 'link' feature detailed?

  • Ron KnightsRon Knights Posts: 1,805

In my not so opinion, DAZ Studio was fine until they decided not to bother making sense out of their installation locations, and instead concentrated on lots of unnecessary features like database, etc. This is especially hard to take after DAZ failed to update the Mac installers for a couple years. Then, instead of fixing them, they went to DIM and now Connect. I save all my installers. I use Crossover so I can run PC installers on my Mac!

I don't need no stinking database or categories.

Links appear in the file-based Content library view as if they were the actual content (they have the same tags etc.). You can create them either by dragging from the Smart Content pane or by right-clicking in the Daz Connect virtual folder under the Daz studio Formats or Poser Formats heading in the Content Library and setting the content directory you wish to use (which will create a folder of links as in the original package(s) if you wish). Once created links can be moved around just like organising real content files.

Awhile ago I decided to redo the original "install" files, including the zipped filed that DIM uses. It took me maybe 3 days to reorganize all the original files to my own system. We're talking `15 years worth of content.

It's too bad DAZ can't do the same for their loyal customers.

I don't understand, what are you wanting them to do?

Fix the installers and original files so they're properly organized. I thought I'd already made myself very clear.

    Hi Ron

"properly organised" - the problem is no one agrees what that is!

...If I remember right, from other threads, didn't you have multiple copies of V4 installed in multiple places as part of your 'proper organisation'? surprise

That's where the catagorizing comes in handy. you don't need to install the files in multiple locations. Instead you catagorize the item by whichever group allows you to find it quickly so say I have Stonemasons Cargo Crates

    I catagorized those in Stonemason/, Scifi/Props/, and Props/Scifi/

it might seem redundant but depending on the scene or whatever I know if I want to add a cargo crate I can find it easily in one of three places :) and no extra space is used on the HD.

I'm glad it works for you; some of us don't like it, and prefer what we have.

Well, I'm not upgrading past 4.8 unless/until content encryption is abandoned (other than scripts). And I will not ever buy encrypted products (other than scripts) for a number of reasons, not the least being the amount of time I spend with content dsf (mostly) and duf (occasionally) files open in a text editor finding and fixing bugs (and so much of the DAZ and PA content I buy has bugs in it - not necessarily noticeable if you jusy load and render it vanilla, but frequently noticeable when i really start using it), and adapting, kitbashing or enhancing the content (and there's very little stuff i use just 'out of the tin'). If I can't access the dsf and duf files to edit in a text editor as needed, then that product is useless to me.

The OP’s question has been reasonably responded to and most posts since are simply revisiting previously discussed remarks, so we are closing the discussion.
