Epic Props: Godrays & Volumetric Light for iRay (Coming Soon)

  • Hi,

I recently purchase Godrays but I'm having trouble getting the same results as shown in the product. The issue is, in the first step I select a prop, I tried both "Directional" or "Dispersive". Then I selected a base style in step 2. After doing that I made a few other selection and then did a render to test my results. My problem is that no matter what I selected in step 2, or 3 or 4, the prop remains solid instead of transparent and never produces what is shown in your examples.

Has anyone using this product received the same results? Is there a setting not mentioned in the instructions that I need to apply?

    Thanks!

    My results (see attached)

You have to pick ONE item from each drop down (in the instruction text details) and once you set that first choice, ALL OTHER CHOICES have to be in that category.

I've used this often and whenever it stays solid, I've found that I picked Dispersive first, but the picked options from the non-dispersive menu choices.

    -----

The other mistake I've made is applying materials or making choices for the PROP that is used (only) for positioning.
From what I remember (it's been a while since I fired this up) you have several parented objects that make up this godray prop.

ONE of them is ONLY for moving and aiming (positioning) the godray; that's how you choose where and how big it will be.

AFTER you get it set, you need to pick a different prop/object to apply all those material settings or options.

    -----------

Your mistake is in one of those two areas.

You either picked options that do not line up with your main choice or are applying the material/effect choices to the wrong part of the godray prop.

And just in case you are new to Daz, you need to make sure you are using the Iray engine to render with.

There is also a 3Delight option for rendering engines.

  • Hi Griffin - Thanks for your help. Unfortunately after following your instructions I still ended up with the same result of a solid object.

These are the steps that I took

Step 1: Varify that render engine is set to Iray

Step 2: From the Step 1 folder, in the Directional Short folder, I added EGVL Short Filter Sunlight Prop 1 to my scene

Step 3: Select child prop: Prop1_Short

Step 4: From Step 2 folder, I selected from the For Short Only/Light Responsive folder, EGVL Light Responsive 5-Sunlight and applied it to child Prop1_short

Step 5: From Step 4 folder, I selected from the For Short Only folder, EGVL Dust Level 0 and applied it to child Prop1_short

Step 6: Using the Spot Render tool I did a Iray render of my scene. The attached are my results

    Did I miss anything?

You left out the step 3 folder: Apply FX. And that's where the transmap is applied. You can choose "No FX" but you do need to apply one of the step 3 presets.

I watched the video. It looks very interesting. I'm wondering about the time it would take to render. I'm not on Windows. I'm on a Macintosh Pro, late 2013 edition, the one that looks like "a cigar holder," etc. The graphics cards are 2 AMD FirePro D700s. I have a 12-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor, and the processor speed is  2.7 GHz. I'm using the Mac OS Sierra, 10.12.6. I'm using DAZ Studio 4.11.0.383, Pro, 64-bit. There isn't an nVidia card. So, with all those specs, is there any one out there who can help by telling me what I might expect in terms of rendering speed if I bought and used this product? It does look wonderful. I'm not criticising the product at all.

I very much like the set.  As I can only use CPU on my Mac, it does take a long time to render.  Still the results are impressive and worth the wait for good looking atmospheric renders.

What I really appreciate is how well thought out the application of the prop and the properties of the prop.  It has a good manual, there is a video that summarizes well and the folders in Studio, are numerical for the steps you take.  Bravo!

So, I'm on a Macintosh, too. Which Mac model are you using? You can see my specs in the post I just recently made. What is "a long time to render"?

As an aside, since this thread has resurfaced, I was looking through the comments and I kept thinking to myself, "ya know? This'd be a great product to have. I could use this in a lot of my renders. Make my promos all artsy and cool!". So I went to look up the product page and guess what....? Turns out I have already purchased it! D'oh!!! Why am I not using it more?

I need a master list of ALL the stuff in my runtime AND I need a secretary to remind me to use the stuff I have. (Maybe I could bribe one of my kids to sort out my stuff so that I know what I have when it comes time to do "art".)

@FeralFey "I need a master list of ALL the stuff in my runtime"

I keep a spreadsheet of everything I purchase. Once built and populated, it only takes a minute to update with each purchase.

  • I started doing the same. The Daz's CMS is pretty bad. I've had content installed through DIM show up only in Smart (hah!) Content and some only in the regular. A spreadsheet or some sort of database is definitely the way to go.
  • I'd be happy if the site's product library just allowed to select between products which are compatible with Iray, 3Delight or both.

I've always used DIM and have never seen thoses problems. Then again, I never work with "Smart Content" since it hasn't proven to be so.

Yeah, I should probably invest in some kind of spreadsheet. (Maybe that's a chore I can pawn off on one of my kids...?) I've tried doing that in the past, but it takes ME forever to get it set up and then I never remember to add new content as I acquire (or build) more.

I too, use DIM and haven't had any problems. And I don't use Smart Content either. It's always seemed unwieldy to me. And it seems to miss content. I know it's meant to make using DS easier for people, but I guess I'm too ingrained in using the "regular" content tab to feel comfortable enough with it (Smart Content) to find it a better option.

@FeralFey "it takes ME forever to get it set up"

My Spreadsheet has a lot of tabs, but reflects the way I originally thought about content. It doesn't exactly match the general Studio conventions but works for me..

@fastbike1 - that's pretty clever, and not at all how I envisioned. Mine has always been one tab, with a massive list of everything I've bought (or rather everything I typed in before I got bored/tired). But I guess that that shows that I don't really deal with spreadsheets all that often. Lol. Seeing how you've done yours, though, I think maybe I'll give it another try, because it is rather ridiculous that I didn't even realize I had Epic Props: Godrays... I seriously need to keep better track of it all. I mean, my reference material is better sorted than my content!
