Custom Content - Fit To on Load

Hey y'all.
So I'm trying to get started with some some custom content. I've managed to create a skirt in a modeler. Import it into Daz. Get it to fit, and create some basic custom morphs for movement in the wind. What I'm struggling with is understanding the "compatability" mess and specifically how to get the skirt to "fit to.." the model I have selected when I open it. It doesn't show up in the "smart content" so I assume that's related. When I do a "fit to.." and select the G3 model, it knows that what it's designed for so it fits at that point, no fuss, no prompt for the "auto fit" tool or anything. So, what am I missing?
I'd ultimately like to be able to share this with others so any other tips to pre-package up as much of this as possible would be great too!
Thank you in advance for your help and guidance!

If you want to have an item fit a figure you have to model around that figure (deally the base shape) then use the Transfer Utility (Edit>Figure>Transfer Utility) to rig the model with matching bones and projected weight maps. Then you can refine the weight maps, remove bones thata ren't needed, and add extra bones to control special parts of the outfit. But fitting does require that the joint centres match for matching bones, and does require basic compatibility information.
In the Transfer utility you set the OBJ, which must be aligned with the figure in its zero state, as the target and the figure that is to wear the iem as the Source; if you modelled around a shape or pose you also need to adjust the Source shape setting to reflect that and check Reverse Source Shape from Target in the extended options.
I've done that, and I've done my initial posing against a zero posed figure. If I do change the "fit to" on the skirt, it follows the model around (more or less). The issue comes when I save it as a "Figure/prop asset" and try to reload it on a different model in a different scene. It loads the object, but it doesn't "fit" it to the model I had selected when I loaded it. I assume it's something with how it's categorized, or exported, or something..?
Was it fitted to the base figure when you saved it as an asset?
I've had mixed results. I think the time in question, i had deleted the base figure. I'm working with a new object now and it auto fits now, it just doesn't parent properly. Which is much more sustainable, so I think that was it. Any ideas how I could get it to auto-parent?
Certainly the item needs to be fitted to save with auto-fitting. Parenting in addition I'm not sure - it's the default behaviour on fitting an item in recent versions of DS anyway (so that hierarchcial presets will work) but I thought if the item was parented on save it should reapply parented.
Just saved a bunch of items, and yes, fitted and parented were saving correctly...
Where can I find more info about these 3 steps? (for Daz Studio 4.8 or later). I've searched the forums, but only find screenshots for version 4.6 or older.
