No figures in DS

I'm a Poser user who is trying to learn Daz Studio. I have been using 4.8 recently to learn to get around DS.
I don't have Iray shader .duf in the Shader Presets. I don't have any Genesis figures available in Figures or People. I have products for them but the figures. If I delete the Genesis that loads up at start then there is no way to load it back into the scene. I'm confused by how this works. Was there files that I should have loaded when I installed 4.8?
I have 4.9.2 but I'm seeing a lot of issues. Since I'm clueless about much of DS I'm afraid to install something that may not work and then trying to fix it. I also saw somewhere that 4.9 may corrupt your existing Content folder. Is this correct? What steps do I take.
I'd really like to use the Victoria 7 that I bought but I'm not sure how. Sorry to be so dense :(

No, it doesn't corrupt your content folder...what can happen is some cases, is that it will corrupt the database from a previous install. The content is fine, it is just that Smart Content (the database driven system) ends up with only the default categories, none of the custom ones that may have been made.
The next thing...how/where are you looking for the figures...Smart Content or Content Library?
Did you install all 3 Starter Essential packs and Default Resources pack?
How did you install the various items that are installed?
I cannot help you, however I feel your pain!!
I wanted to learn Daz Studio, as well, because I purchased Victoria 7 and would like to use her, as well.
I have grown up with Poser. I know my way around a little and use Poser 7 for quick looks and Poser Pro 2014 when I want to do serious stuff.
I have several versions of DS and don't know which one to learn from.
I did not know DS 4.9 changed the Content Folder until after I upgraded. I see in my Purchases that DS 4.5 came with DS 4.9 and I don't know why.
I can import G2F just fine into Poser Pro 2014 so I am afraid to mess up anthing.
DS 4.9 seems like it takes a genius to figure it out and I am not that!!
I have tried to find out the differences between DS 4.5 and DS 4.9, however I can't. All I can find is 4.9 is very difficult and the content has changed around.
I do much better when I know how something works. I know what I can move around in my Poser runtime and what I can't. What I can rename and what I can't.
If learning DS 4.5 would be easier for now, I wish someone would tell me. Or maybe I should reinstall DS 1.01 or DS 3.1.2.32 just to learn them.
I do wish I could have several versions of DS on my computer. I don't know if I can or not!!
Good to know that my Content folder will be ok. I had used DS 3.1 forever and it worked fine for me for what I needed it for. I then found a user interface in DS4.8 that I really liked and I have been very happy with it. I recently decided to use Iray and that's when I found that it was missing the .duf files. I had some weird .mfs or such files but not the .duf. Then I found no Genesis which I had no opportunity or need to use previously.
I did not install the starter essentials. Guess that's why they're called 'essentials'...they're needed. I will try installing them and see if that's why I'm missing Iray and Genesis. Thanks for letting me know that it's the 'essentials' pack that I'm missing. Hope this fixes it.
Jan, I have multiple versions of DS on my computer. I do not have 4.9 installed yet. I install everything manually for now. You can rename and organize the same folders in DS that you can in Poser runtime. DS actually gives you more leeway than Poser. That is a good or bad thing depending on you. Some people want to know exactly what one spot similar items should be installed to every time (that's me) and other people like the control of putting things right where they want them.
As an example (from my limited knowledge) -
Poser runtime V4 outfit, three different folders:
Runtime/Library/Character/V4 outfit - clothing
Runtime/Library/Materials/V4 outfit - mats
Runtime/Library/Props/V4 outfit - props
Daz Studio V4 outfit:
Content/People/Victoria 4.2/*clothing name or vendor name*/
subfolders go in there for materials, presets, props, etc.
or
you could put it into Content/Figures/etc.
or wherever you chose to as long as you can find it again. You could create your own folder name and stick it in there.
And there's always My Library if that's still being used.
This actually was an early-on issue that I had with DS. It was too vague as to where to find product. I kept losing it and not everyone put it in the same place. I think that 4.9 is suppose to help organize it.
Burpee: I had no idea I could arrange things where I wanted. I mean, as much as possible. That is excellent to know. I did try to use DS years and years ago and just felt lost. So many people use it and have such beaufiul results. I want to render something, anything in IRAY!! On my bucket list, I guess.
Thank you so much for your reply.
